This week, we welcome Corrine Koenig, president of the American Women's Club of Luxembourg, to talk about how we can give back to those in need.
In terms of GDP per capita, Luxembourg is one of the richest countries in the world. If you’re reading this article, chances are you’re an over-achieving, English speaking expat, and you live a fairly charmed life. If you are looking to pay it forward this holiday season, this episode is for you!
Even though Luxembourg is considered by most to be affluent, there are plenty of those in need. In fact, the foyers in Luxembourg serve over 1600 kids per year. That includes food, housing and clothing. But when it comes to extras, like holiday gifts, the social safety net doesn’t stretch that far.
On this episode of Mom Life in Luxembourg, I’m joined by Corrine Koenig, president of the American Women’s Club of Luxembourg (AWCL), to chat about how you can get some good karma by helping out local kids in need this holiday season.
Corinne is the first dual-citizenship President of the American Women’s Club of Luxembourg. Born in Milwaukee and living in Luxembourg since 1971, she brings humour, heart, and a deep sense of community to everything she does. Married for over 43 years, with an amazing husband, three wonderful grown children, two adored grandchildren, and a fabulous daughter-in-law, Corinne believes strongly in giving back.
Gifts for Kids is the AWCL’s major philanthropic initiative, and it’s happening again this year. The project supports children living in challenging conditions across Luxembourg’s various foyers, which are group homes for those in vulnerable situations. Be it refugee kids, kids whose parents are sick, or kids whose parents can’t provide the minimum requirements for suitable housing, the foyers serve them all. The initiative began as a continuation of the U.S. Marine Corps' Toys for Tots program, and has evolved into a cherished tradition that brings joy to kids in foyers across the country. I have personally volunteered to drop off the toys, and it was one of my favorite holiday memories here in Luxembourg. You can’t really overstate how good it feels to get involved and do some good.
The main way they raise money is through their super fun Halloween event, Trunk or Treat. This is another activity as a mom with young kids I highly recommend! However, since Halloween is over, there are still other ways you can get involved by donating money or corporate sponsorships.
If money is tight this season, there are also countless ways you can donate your time to make this year a spectacular giving season! If you want more details, just tune into the show!
Whether it's your first holiday season in Luxembourg or you’re seeking a meaningful way to give back, this episode is sure to inspire and inform. As the old year closes and a new one begins, why not enrich your life by extending a hand to those in need? Get involved, build karma, and make your mark in this splendid Grand Duchy. Listen to the full episode to learn more and find out how you can contribute to making a difference in these children’s lives.
