Where in the Grand Duchy can you go, safe in the knowledge that the experience won’t be incredibly stressful? Somewhere you won’t want to ‘curl up and dye'

As parents of young children, we always hope our kids will be accommodated and not just tolerated.
Maybe it’s their first cut, a rite of passage in some cultures. Perhaps you’ve been cutting it yourself thus far or you’re simply new to Luxembourg.

Be reassured, we have several recommendations on good authority from parents across our communities!

What makes a salon toddler-friendly?

Some parents say a warm welcome and a reasonable tariff is enough. A stylist who takes time to reassure, has stacks of patience and a steady hand. Extras can help draw kids in like a gimmicky salon chair, TV screens strategically placed to mitigate wriggling and of course a reward lollipop!

Putting kids at ease is paramount. Chatting to connect and engage. What about little ones with ants in their pants? Or those yet to master the power of speech and comprehension? Not so easy to encourage them to sit still and look straight ahead while a stranger yields a pair of scissors.

Where to go in Luxembourg?

Here are some tried and tested places. For little ones, prices can range from €6 to €45+.  Check directly for up to date tariffs.

Teddy Bear Barbershop, Pétange  – Apt name for a place so accommodating of kids, with a jumbo felt dartboard in the waiting area, and a car salon chair (complete with buttons for sound effects) facing a TV screen showing cartoons. As well as a lollipop, kids get to choose a free gift from a cabinet of small toys. You’ll get exactly the same experience in their second premises in Esch-sur-Alzette.

Hair Creative, Hollerich – If you have a particularly anxious child, staff are very patient here. Bonus points for being a stone’s throw from Park Merl with a huge playground.

Ryanhair opened their most recent branch in Schifflange in March 2023, totalling 10 salons across Luxembourg. Children are made to feel very welcome. Historically you paid the age of your child for a cut - now a flat rate of €6 applies for age 4 and under. Incredibly good value.

Igorance – A total of 6 salons, Luxembourg Ville and Hesperange are particular favourites. The city salon is a mere 3 minutes walk from the Pirate Ship playground for a pre or post-cut play!

Gentlemen barbershop, Schifflange - Many parents have had great experiences and recommend Lucas and Sabrina.

According to my Style, Neudorf  -  Consistently positive feedback from parents. Another place that boasts a car shaped salon chair, and the staff are so engaging. Kids receive complimentary juices and the salon has cartoons playing to help distract them, while happy customers can leave with free sweeties and a balloon. The salon has another venue in Itzig, with the same set-up for children.

A quirky option for little boys is the Barber Truck parked on Route D’Arlon, Strassen, and uses eco-friendly vegan products, too.

La Coiffe, Bertrange – The friendly staff put children at ease, while a bear shaped salon chair and child-sized capes with colourful icons from countries all over the world help to create a sense of fun. All kids leave with a lollipop!

Nature & Coiffure, Belair-   This is a favourite amongst environmentally conscious families with vegan products used and sold here.

T Hair City, Bertrange (City Concorde)– This salon comes with many recommendations for the kind and helpful staff that take time to settle little ones and make sure they are comfortable.

Passage Blue, Luxembourg Ville operates a whopping 63 hair and beauty houses across France with one here in Luxembourg City on Avenue de la Gare.

At-home hair styling

Some parents opt to cut hair themselves or use a mobile service for various reasons, whether it's to save costs compared to the expense of a salon cut, or simply a case of time and convenience. At-home cuts are also more beneficial if you have a very young or particularly anxious child who might find a salon overwhelming.

Karolina has decided to wait until her son is older and cut his hair herself. She says: “Even with a cheaper cut it all adds up. They barely take off half an inch and you’re back paying for another cut a few weeks later.”

Nisha’s son was incredibly anxious about having his hair cut. “He was so scared by the thought of it. He eventually let his Dad do it at home so we’ve stuck with it, he's happy."

Even if you don’t fancy having a go yourself, mobile hairdressers such as Hair Flair can be a good option for kids to be in a familiar environment and you have the convenience of not having to leave your home.  Many mobile services are listed online, on social media platforms including parent and family Facebook groups. The ‘Ladies of Luxembourg’ Facebook group runs promo Mondays each week showcasing adverts, which often include mobile hairdressers as well as salon promotions.

Sensory Cuts

We know children can experience varying degrees of anxiety about getting a haircut, it’s not uncommon. It can be a particularly significant issue for children with sensory processing issues or disorders.

Sensory-friendly salons and a “Sensory Cut” is becoming more common in the States and the UK and Ireland, for example. Indeed, salons are launching to solely offer this type of service. However, this is not something that is apparent here in Luxembourg, just yet.
