The news of her passing was confirmed in a press statement by her manager, and follows a long period of illness.

Fredriksson’s manager, Marie Dimberg, said in a press statement:

“It is with great sorrow that we must confirm that one of our biggest and most beloved artises is no more. Marie Fredriksson passed away in the morning of 9 December as a result of her earlier illness.”

Fredriksson, whose band Roxette sold over 75 million albums around the world and had no less than 19 songs on the UK’s top-40 charts, suffered a brain tumour in 2002. At the time, she was given a 20-20% chance of survival. While she survived the treatment, she suffered long-lasting side effects from the radiation treatment.

She performed together with band mate Per Gessle at the wedding of Swedish Crown Princess Victoria in 2010. Gessle praised Fredriksson’s strength in an interview with a Swedish newspaper last year, after their final tour together:

“She was fantastic. I don’t know how many hundreds of concerts we did in the last five years, and it was thanks to her energy that it was possible. Her doctors said that it was impossible, but she did it - for several years.” In 2016, Fredriksson announced that, due to the effects of her treatment, she could no longer perform or record with Roxette.

She leaves behind her husband and producer of her 2013 solo album Mikael Bolyos, and their two children.
