One of indie rock's most iconic tracks is getting a fresh pulse in 2025: Band of Horses have teamed up with dance music heavyweight Gryffin for an official rework of their 2006 anthem The Funeral, bringing the track's emotional weight to the dancefloor while honouring its lasting legacy.
Released via Sub Pop Records, The Funeral (2025 Edit) taps into the soaring vulnerability of the original, but reimagines it with Gryffin’s signature melodic electronic touch. The result is a nostalgic yet forward-looking tribute to a song that has defined a generation of music fans.
“Some songs just stay with you forever, and this one hit me the moment I first heard it almost 20 years ago,” says Gryffin. “Band of Horses has been one of my favourite bands for years, so it’s a real honour to reimagine such an iconic track with them. Thank you to Ben and the band for letting me breathe new life into this one.”
Originally released on Band of Horses’ 2006 debut Everything All the Time, The Funeral became an instant cult classic, known for its emotionally jagged build, Ben Bridwell’s ghostly vocals, and themes of longing, change, and self-reflection. The band would go on to release six studio albums, earning critical acclaim and a Grammy nomination along the way. Most recently, they returned to their rawer, punk-edged roots with 2022’s Things Are Great.
For Gryffin, the Japanese American producer known for platinum certified crossover hits and collaborations with artists like OneRepublic, MØ, Carly Rae Jepsen, Kygo, and Noah Kahan, the track marks both a tribute and a return. Known for fusing dance energy with indie heart, The Funeral (2025 Edit) connects deeply with his earliest influences, making it a standout moment in his growing catalogue.
