On Monday evening, the final play-off between a BGL Ligue side and a team from the Éierepromotioun saw Walfer clinch promotion after a nerve-wracking penalty shootout against Canach.

The decisive promotion play-off match between Canach, who slipped into the relegation place after a draw against Mamer on the final day, and Walferdange, who secured their spot with a last-day victory over Bettembourg, took place on Monday evening in Beggen. Both teams were fighting for a spot in Luxembourg's football top flight, with Canach hoping to survive after just one season in the BGL Ligue, and Walferdange aiming to achieve a remarkable promotion.

Jeunesse Canach – Résidence Walferdange 1:1 (6:7 on penalties)
Scorers: 1:0 Duarte (45'+1), 1:1 Da Silva (75')

The match got off to a tense start, with Canach eager to take control and dictating much of the early play. Walfer initially held their defensive shape but struggled to mount threatening attacks, as Canach enjoyed the bulk of possession and probed the Walfer defence with patient build-up play.

The first real chance of the match came when Aguiar tested Walfer goalkeeper De Paiva, who produced a solid save, before reacting quickly to another dangerous cross soon after. Walfer had few opportunities going forward, with Monteiro's long-range effort posing little threat to Canach keeper Roulez. Despite Canach's dominance, Walfer's defence held firm, blocking shots and intercepting passes to keep the score level.

Just before half-time, Canach's pressure finally paid off. Following a corner that Walfer failed to clear, a scramble in the penalty area ended with Duarte pouncing on the loose ball and firing home from close range, giving Canach a deserved 1-0 lead. The goal reflected Canach's superior first-half display, as they created more chances and looked the more dangerous side, while Walfer needed to improve significantly in attack if they were to turn the match around and secure promotion.

After the interval, Canach looked to manage their advantage and continued playing compactly, creating chances primarily from set pieces. Labourie's header from a corner narrowly missed the target, while Walfer started to push forward more assertively. Despite their increased attacking intent, they initially struggled with tempo and precision. Gradually, Walfer's pressure began to tell, with Sow shooting from distance (albeit off target) and a series of slick moves down the flanks nearly resulting in goals, only for Macedo and Monteiro to narrowly miss connecting in front of goal.

The breakthrough finally came in the 75th minute. Macedo rose to head a high ball forward, setting up Da Silva, who found himself unmarked in the box and scored the 1-1 equaliser. The goal had been coming, as Walfer looked increasingly dangerous and Canach started to lose their grip on the game. Despite some late openings for both sides, neither could find a winner in normal time, sending the match into extra time with the score tied.

Extra time brought more of the same, with both teams searching for a decisive goal but unwilling to take significant risks. Canach dominated at times and threatened on the break, but their attacks lacked the necessary precision. Walfer, too, had a golden chance, as Monteiro Peti broke free in the box but shot wide. With both sides struggling for a clinical touch, the stalemate persisted after 120 minutes, leaving the outcome to be decided by penalties.

The shootout was a marathon affair, requiring 14 penalties before the deadlock was finally broken. In the end, Walfer kept their composure and edged out Canach 7-6, capping a dramatic evening and securing their place in the BGL Ligue for the 2026/27 season. For Canach, as well as Mamer, who were relegated in a similar manner the previous evening, the result means an immediate return to the Éierepromotioun after just one year in the top flight.

Walfer coach reflects on a dream promotion

Walfer’s coach, Patrick Oliveira, was ecstatic after the final whistle, contending that their goal was "just to finish in the top six". He added that the play-offs were merely a dream, but that it is fantastic that they have now reached the BGL Ligue, this being the ultimate reward for his players. The coach was elated by the atmosphere and the support from their fans, as he still grapples with the outcome of this nerve-wracking game.
