More than just a training camp, this event provided talented young Luxembourgish basketball players the rare prospect of being scouted for scholarships to study and play basketball at a high level in the United States. The possibility of pursuing such a dream proved a major draw for several up-and-coming athletes.

This year, the camp’s highlight was a showcase led by Rick Brooks, a notorious coach from the United States, giving participants a chance to demonstrate their progress in front of coaches, family members, and supporters, and offering them a taste of competitive play in an encouraging setting.

The camp itself was coordinated by a team of familiar faces: former national team players who have previously worked with Brooks. According to Avanti Mondorf president Yves Braun, the idea for the showcase started as a spontaneous suggestion from Brooks, who is launching a new project to help and support Luxembourgish players. Braun explained: “Everyone knows going to university or high school in America is expensive. This is a way to make it more affordable and to help our young people fulfill this dream.”

Mike Feyder, coach of the Sparta Bertrange women’s team, praised the camp’s grassroots approach: “What I like about this camp is that it does not seek the spotlight with flashy show effects, but instead aims to promote true grassroots basketball. That’s why I’m always happy to come back – to work on what really matters in basketball.”

For many of the camp’s young players, there was a palpable sense of excitement and nervousness, especially as Brooks presented himself and his project more closely to the group.

One of the standout participants, Arthur Ladonet from Avanti Mondorf, shared his ambitions: “My dream is to become a professional player. Here, maybe two or three of us at most from the country or region have this kind of opportunity. If things go well, I could maybe go to the US.”

Making the leap to America is never easy, and succeeding there is an even greater challenge. As Brooks put it: “I know there are talented players in Luxembourg, and throughout Europe. They all have ambitions and want to know what it means to play abroad and what it takes to be a professional basketball player. This is an opportunity to show them the demands of the professional game. In Europe, players, like my own son, often learn the fundamentals better than in the US, but in America the competition is much tougher, and that’s the hardest part.”

At the close of the camp, Rick Brooks selected four players, including Ladonet, who will now have the chance to travel to the US, bringing them one step closer to realising their dream of playing basketball professionally.
