RCL Lightning’s Junior Touch teams celebrated a thrilling day of success at the first-ever Belgium Youth Championship in Brussels on Sunday 18th, showcasing their talent and teamwork on an international stage.
RCL Lightning’s Junior Touch team brought home pride and silverware last Sunday, 18 May, as they took part in the inaugural Belgium Youth Championship held in Brussels. With seven teams of boys and girls aged 10 to 14 taking part, the competition was fierce – but it was RCL Lightning’s Dragons who emerged victorious.
The Dragons dominated their group stage matches, before seeing off clubmates the CATs in a lively semi-final. They then went on to defeat a skillful and speedy Dutch side from Den Haag in the final, finishing 5–2. It was a particularly notable achievement for the CATs as well, who were the only all-girls team in the tournament and secured a commendable fourth-place finish.
Touch rugby, already Luxembourg’s leading mixed team sport at the adult level and played internationally, is now gaining traction among younger age groups. The tournament provided a valuable opportunity for local junior players to test their skills against opposition from Belgium and the Netherlands. Even at this young level, players demonstrated the flow, speed, and agility that makes Touch a dynamic and inclusive sport.
Looking ahead, older juniors aged 14 and 15 will have the opportunity to compete in the RCL Social League from June, taking on teams from JP Morgan, Clearstream, and Aztec – and even facing off against their coaches.
For families interested in getting involved, RCL Lightning’s Junior Touch programme welcomes new players every Saturday. It’s a great way for children of all abilities to enjoy a mixed-gender sport that promotes teamwork, athleticism, and fun in equal measure.
