A strong first half wasn't enough for the Luxembourg national men's basketball team, as they fell 68:59 to Norway in their final 2027 World Cup pre-qualification match, marking the end of their campaign.
On Thursday, the Luxembourg national men's basketball team concluded their pre-qualification campaign for the 2027 World Cup with a fourth and final match against Norway. Despite a strong start, Luxembourg ultimately fell short, losing 68:59 in an intense contest.
The Red Lions began the game in impressive form, leading 21:15 after the first quarter thanks to a cohesive team effort. Seven players scored points under the guidance of coach Ken Diederich, and Luxembourg extended their lead to 38:30 by halftime. However, Norway mounted a comeback in the second half, with Chris Ndow and Harald Frey leading the charge. By the end of the third quarter, Norway had taken a 52:46 lead.
Luxembourg fought back in the final quarter, levelling the score with five minutes remaining. However, Norway regained control in the closing stages, securing the win. Luxembourg struggled offensively in the second half, scoring only 21 points and converting just 3 of 21 three-point attempts. Oliver Vujakovic was the top scorer for Luxembourg with 12 points.
Thomas Grün retires from national team
The match marked the end of an era for co-captain Thomas Grün, who announced his retirement from the national team after a remarkable 29-year career.
Qualification hopes dashed
With this defeat, Luxembourg finds itself in last place in their pre-qualification group, ending their chances of advancing to the next round. Ten teams participate in the pre-qualifiers, with the top three group winners and the best second-place team progressing. Luxembourg's fate is sealed regardless of the outcome of Sunday's match between Romania and Norway.
