The Dutch rider claimed victory after an exhilarating race, with Marie Schreiber showcasing a strong performance at the front for much of the event, but ultimately finishing third behind Lucinda Brand.
Fem van Empel secured victory in an exciting final sprint ahead of Lucinda Brand. Marie Schreiber secured 3rd place, only two seconds behind the victor. Marianne Vos and Blanka Vas completed the top five. The win marked Van Empel's third consecutive triumph in Benidorm.
After her strong performance, Schreiber now sits 4th in the overall standings, trailing behind Zoe Backstedt who is in 3rd position by just six points. Liv Wenzel finished 51st, crossing the line 5 minutes and 30 seconds behind the winner.
Schreiber had an excellent start, placing herself among the leading group of 17 riders in the opening laps. This group included contenders such as Fem van Empel, Lucinda Brand, and Carmen Alvarado. Van Empel raised the pace in the third lap, but the group managed to regroup by lap’s end.
In the fourth lap, the leaders upped the intensity, reducing the front group to three riders – Van Empel, Brand, and Vas. Alvarado trailed slightly behind, while Schreiber found herself in a third group alongside Vos and Backstedt.
By the penultimate lap, the chasers closed the gap, bringing 10 riders into contention for the World Cup victory heading into the final lap. Schreiber made a valiant effort to break away in the closing moments, but Van Empel had the strongest finish and secured the win ahead of Brand and Schreiber.
