Niederkorn and Differdange eliminated after extra time

Progrès Niederkorn had a Herculean task ahead of them going into the second leg against FC Midtjylland eng on Thursday after a 2-0 defeat away in Denmark in the first match. Although Jeff Strasser's team delivered a much improved performance, it was not meant to be.

De Almeida put the Luxembourg team in the lead after just 15 minutes, sending the ball home from 16 metres out. A second was almost on the cards just before the break, as a strike from Karamoko hit the crossbar. After halftime, Niederkorn continued to press on, with De Almeida scoring his second in the 52nd minute to make it 2-0. Natami was later denied a goal after a deflection by the Danish side's keeper, which meant the game went to extra time. Although Progrès had a number of chances, the visitors managed to score after 112 minutes, with a strike by Chilufya ending Niederkorn's hopes of progressing to the next round in spite of their victory.

Differdange faced Slovenia's Maribor away after a 1-1 draw in the first leg, with goals galore as both sides battled it out on Thursday.

The Luxembourg side went 1-0 down in the 5th minute after a Kolar strike, but were able to equalise through a penalty by Erico Castro in the 28th minute. Things picked up for Differdange just before halftime as Trani put the visitors a goal ahead in the 42nd minute.

After the break, Differdange went 3-1 up a mere minute after play resumed, with another strike by Trani. But they could not hold on to their lead for long - Repas scored for the Slovenians in the 62nd minute, while Brnic equalised after 82 minutes, sending the game into extra time.

For much of the additional time, the match seemed set to end in a penalty shoot-out - however, the referee gave a penalty to Maribor after an apparent foul by D'Anzico in the area. The penalty was duly converted by Illicic after 122 minutes, breaking Differdange hearts and ensuring their exit from the Conference League.
