Stage 12 could provide the sprinters with their final opportunity of this year's Tour. Their teams are therefore expected to take control of the race from the outset. Although the route is not entirely flat, the three Category 4 climbs scattered along the course should be well within the capabilities of the fast men. The final climb comes 23.5 kilometres from the finish, leaving ample time for the peloton to regroup before the finale. After 179 kilometres of racing, victory is expected to be decided in a bunch sprint in Chalon-sur-Saône.
