Saving energy and protecting the environment - what can I do in everyday life?

As energy prices rise, environmentally friendly solutions are becoming more interesting and gaining more and more followers. Sustainability has never been more at the forefront of consumers’ minds. Sustainability is also an important issue for businesses – a big challenge, but also an opportunity to break new ground.

Household energy consumption

Power guzzlers in the home are nothing new these days. It is not only the general public that needs to rethink. More and more household appliance manufacturers are focusing on innovative new technologies to reduce energy consumption. Replacing old household appliances is worthwhile - and not just to reduce electricity consumption at home. Innovative features such as smart control via an app, automatic defrosting and timers also increase the comfort and allow resources to be used more efficiently. Older household appliances, on the other hand, make the meter run faster.

A dishwasher that uses the natural mineral zeolite to dry the dishes. A smart washing machine that automatically dispenses the right amount of detergent. A fridge with a freshness system that keeps food fresh longer. A tumble dryer that reuses warm air to dry clothes more efficiently are just a few examples of how energy and resources can be saved in everyday life.

More and more household appliance manufacturers are promoting sustainability and greener solutions, but what’s actually behind those words?

We took a look at some household appliances from one of the market leaders: Bosch.

Save water with i-DOS washing machines

Sustainable living begins with washing. Thanks to an intelligent dosing system, the i-DOS washing machine washes clothes efficiently and effortlessly. The i-DOS washing machines detect the load size, the fabric type, and the degree of soiling. They dose exactly the right amount of detergent, taking into account water hardness.

This saves not only detergent, but also water and extra rinse cycles - and all this in the best energy efficiency class A. Therefore i-DOS saves up to 38%1 detergent and up to 10 litres of water2 per wash cycle.

VitaFresh: less food waste, longer lasting flavour

Proper storage is key. Bosch fridge-freezers with VitaFresh create the ideal environment to keep food fresh for longer and reduce food waste. Two different climate zones keep meat and fish close to 0 °C, while an extra-large drawer with humidity control keeps fruit and vegetables in perfect condition.

Save energy with PerfectDry dishwashers

PerfectDry dishwashers use the natural mineral Zeolite® to trap moisture from the wash cycle and convert it into warm air. This is evenly distributed by the innovative 3D airflow for powerful and gentle drying. Even hard-to-dry items such as plastic dishes are perfectly dry thanks to PerfectDry technology.

The result: PerfectDry dishwashers use 20%3 less energy than dishwashers without zeolite. PerfectDry: Hello energy savings and goodbye extra drying by hand.

Live sustainably and save energy with Bosch heat pump dryers

The Bosch heat pump dryers, rated A+++, offer the most efficient drying technology and comfort. The innovative heat pump technology reuses the hot exhaust air to dry clothes. As a result, heat pump dryers use up to 68%4 less energy than conventional condensation dryers. And while the efficiency of other dryers decreases with each drying cycle if the lint filter is not cleaned manually after each load, our heat pump dryers with self-cleaning condenser or AutoClean technology clean themselves automatically. This keeps energy consumption constant over the lifetime of the heat pump dryer.

Baking - old habits as energy traps

We’ve all been there: We get into the habit of preheating the oven while we are mixing the dough - or even before. As a result of unexpected delays in the baking process, it then often runs for an unnecessarily long time. In many cases, preheating is not even necessary, and not doing so can save up to 20% of energy. Removing unused baking trays or other accessories from the oven can also save up to 20%.

Driving sustainability through innovation

While consumer interest in environmentally friendly alternatives continues to grow, the research and technological development we’re seeing from manufacturers is equally impressive. Around 40,000 Bosch associates working in software development are driving digital transformation worldwide. At 128 locations, they develop technologies for products and services – with sustainability as a key research topic. By acting in an economically, ecologically, and socially responsible way, Bosch aims to improve people’s quality of life and secure the livelihoods of present and future generations. Replace old inefficient household appliances and contribute to ecological change.
