CRECHE CLOSURE – Luxembourg prosecutors are investigating suspected violence against young children at a crèche in Pétange, which has been closed as part of an ongoing inquiry. Given the seriousness of the allegations, the case was referred to an examining magistrate, who immediately issued a search and seizure warrant for the crèche and its registered office.

BABY FORMULA RECALL – Food producer Danone is recalling further batches of baby formula brands Aptamil and Milumil following new recommendations from the European Food Safety Authority regarding a bacterial toxin. Parents are urged not to use the products. Several European manufacturers have issued similar recalls in recent weeks.

FRIEDEN IN CANADA – Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Luc Frieden is on a working visit to Boston and Ottawa until Monday. He will address Europe’s role and responsibilities at Harvard Kennedy School, before meeting Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in Ottawa to discuss expanding economic relations between the two countries.

MURDER SENTENCE – A Diekirch court has handed out a life sentence to the Moroccan man accused of the murder of 40-year-old Portuguese woman, Diana Santos, in Diekirch in 2022. The 51-year-old has always denied the charge, while admitting he had helped to dismember the body and dispose of the remains.

LUXEMBOURG CONGESTION – Traffic congestion in Luxembourg City has worsened significantly, according to TomTom’s latest index. Motorists now spend an average of 75 hours a year – that’s more than three full days – stuck in traffic jams, pushing the capital to 207th in the global ranking of the world’s most congested cities.

World

WINTER OLYMPICSThe Winter Olympics officially open in Italy today, with a ceremony at Milan’s San Siro Stadium. The Games are being hosted across Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, with 2,900 athletes from 90 countries competing for 116 gold medals. The opening ceremony at 8pm will include performances from Mariah Carey and Andrea Bocelli. Skiers Gwyneth Ten Raa and Mathieu Osch are representing Luxembourg and the Luxembourg flag will be carried by Osch this evening. Grand Duke Henri and Sports Minister Martine Hansen will also attend.

US IRAN TALKS The United States and Iran are due to hold their first formal talks since last year’s conflict and US strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities. The US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff is meeting Iran’s foreign minister in Muscat this morning, as tensions remain high following President Trump warning that Iran’s supreme leader should be “very worried.”

US RUSSIA NUCLEAR TREATY – The United States and Russia are close to agreeing to continue observing the New START nuclear arms treaty after it expired on Thursday. A source familiar to the talks told the news site Axios that negotiations have taken place in Abu Dhabi over the past day, but the draft plan still requires approval from both presidents.

Sport

FOOTBALL – Union Berlin face Frankfurt tonight in the German Bundesliga. In France, Strasbourg beat Monaco 3-1 to reach the Cup quarter-finals, while Metz host Lille in Ligue 1 this evening. In the English Premier League, Leeds are playing against Nottingham. And in Italy, Atalanta Bergamo are through to the Cup semi-finals after beating Juventus 3-0.

RUGBY – The Six Nations rugby championship has started with France defeating Ireland 36-14. Tomorrow, England face Wales and Italy take on Scotland in the tournament’s second round of fixtures.

AMERICAN FOOTBALL – The New England Patriots will seek a record seventh Super Bowl title against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. The Patriots, led by 23-year-old quarterback Drake Maye, have defied expectations after years of struggle following Tom Brady’s departure. Bad Bunny will perform the first-ever Super Bowl half-time show entirely in Spanish.

Weather

While the day gets off to a chilly start, the icy conditions of the last week should hopefully clear up somewhat, with rain showers forecast all day long. Temperatures start at 1–3°C this morning, warming up to a maximum of 8°C in the afternoon.
