It looks like the Swedish quartet Royal Republic are in for a good year. Their show at den Atelier on Friday, 6 February promises to be a funky, riff-heavy rock affair – and has already sold out. Luckily, we have a few tickets to spare.

Founded in Malmö in 2007, their rise to rock ‘n’ roll stardom was a rapid one. Their first album, We Are the Royal, saw three singles top Sweden’s Bandit Rock Most-Wanted-List, with the track Tommy Gun also placing first on the MTV Rock Charts.

Their second record – Save the Nation, released in 2012 – was almost met with critical and popular acclaim. Within just a few years, the alternative rockers had established themselves as familiar faces in the European rock ‘n’ roll scene.

Most recently, the metal-adjacent musicians from Malmö have refined their sound, letting their rock-based DNA mingle with elements of punk, pop, and disco grooves – danceable tunes with a noticeable edge.

Through it all, they’ve always maintained a tongue-in-cheek energy. Far from taking themselves seriously, their tone is always one of (ir)reverent admiration for nostalgic sounds. On their latest album, LoveCop, they take on the glittery identity of an 80s glam rock band on tracks like Electra, Lazerlove, and LoveCop.

This wink-wink attitude is even more apparent on their latest EP, The Blastbeaters, on which they cover four classic, instantly recognsiable songs from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. The EP’s cover, and music videos, however, depict them as ghoulish metal musicians covered in blood and corpse paint.
