EVA MARIJA WINS LUXEMBOURG SONG CONTEST – Eva Marija will represent Luxembourg at the Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna after she won the national competition yesterday evening. An emotional performance of her song ‘Mother Nature’ was enough for Eva, at 20 the youngest candidate, to make it to the final three of the Luxembourg Song Contest, where it went back to the public vote. She took the contest with 222 points, ahead of Steve Castille with 136 and Irem with 122.

OCTAVE SAHAKIAN MISSING PERSON REPORT – Police in Capellen have issued a missing person report for an ‘Octave Sahakian’, last seen on Friday evening where he left his green Alfa Romeo on a dirt track between Leudelange and Cessange. He’s 30 years old, 1.73 metres tall, and described as slim, with blue eyes, a beard, long blond wavy hair, and speaks French. Anyone with any information about his whereabouts is asked to contact the Capellen police station at (+352) 244 30 1000 or by email at police.capellensteinfort@police.etat.lu.

BABY FORMULA RECALLED – The national food administration has issued a recall of a baby formula brand over contamination fears, in the second such recall this week. The affected product is the 800g tin of ‘Nutrilon PROfutura 1’ formula by the brand Nutricia. As before, the product is being recalled over concerns it could contain a bacterial toxin known to cause diarrhoea and vomiting. You can check LU-Alert.lu for full details of the recall.

LINDA GAASCH STEPS DOWN – Linda Gaasch, Green party member of the city council since 2019, has announced her resignation in effect from January 31st, taking a break from politics for personal reasons. She will be replaced by Fabricio Costa, former spokesperson for the young Greens.

ICE KILL AGAIN IN MINNEAPOLISA second killing in the city of Minneapolis by US federal immigration agents has sparked uproar. Agents shot dead Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse, less than three weeks after an Immigration and Customs enforcement officer shot and killed Renee Good, with the Trump administration again claiming that the officers were acting in self-defence, despite video evidence appearing to contradict their account. This has sparked new protests and impassioned demands by state and city leaders for ICE to end its operation in the city, with Minnesota state Governor Tim Walz calling the shooting “horrific” and demanding that state authorities be allowed to lead the investigation.

STORM CONTINUES ACROSS US – A massive winter storm is continuing its march towards the northeast, threatening tens of millions of Americans with blackouts, transportation chaos and freezing cold.
After sweeping across the country’s southwest and central areas, the storm system has begun to hit the heavily populated mid-Atlantic and northeastern states with snow and freezing rain.

STORY THREE – Climber Alex Honnold has completed another high-risk feat this morning in Taiwan, becoming the first person to scale the supertall skyscraper Taipei 101 without ropes or safety gear, broadcast live to a global audience on Netflix. It took the 40-year-old American climber just 90 minutes to successfully scale the 101-story tower, topping out at 508 metres, before rappelling down to reunite with his wife.

AUSTRALIAN OPEN TENNIS – In the men’s draw, top seed Carlos Alcaraz continued his bid for a first title down under with a straight set win against Tommy Paul, joined by Novak Djokovic who reached the quarters without hitting a ball after his opponent withdrew injured. Last year’s runner up Alexander Zverev is also in the mix.

AUSTRALIAN OPEN TENNIS – In the women’s draw, top seed and two-time Melbourne champion Aryna Sabalenka is through in straight sets, where she’s joined by third seed and 2025 French Open champion Coco Gauff, who battled through her round of 16 match in three sets.

PREMIER LEAGUE FOOTBALL – Arsenal will play Manchester United at 16:30 GMT in the pick of today’s matches in the English Premier League, with Arsenal hoping to extend their lead at the top of the table, and Manchester United hoping for another good result after beating Manchester City last weekend.
