
ROAD ACCIDENTS – Three people were injured in separate road accidents across Luxembourg yesterday. A car overturned between Diekirch and Ettelbruck at 11.30pm last night. Shortly before 8.30pm, a pedestrian was struck in Sandweiler. And at 7pm, several vehicles collided on the Trier motorway. Emergency services attended all three incidents, with one person injured in each case.
SOCIAL MEDIA BAN – Justice Minister Elisabeth Margue says Luxembourg is working on national solutions for social media age limits, similar to Australia. In Britain, the House of Lords voted yesterday to ban social media for under-16s.This increases the pressure on Prime Minister Keir Starmer to implement a law.
FEMICIDE CRIME – Luxembourg will not follow Italy in creating a standalone femicide crime, with Justice Minister Elisabeth Margue confirming existing laws are sufficient. The decision means gender-based killings will continue to be prosecuted under current homicide laws that already allow for doubled sentences when gender motives are proven and carry a sentence of life imprisonment.
COLETTE FLESCH RIP – The political world is mourning the death of former Luxembourg City Mayor, Minister and Olympic fencer Colette Flesch, who passed away on Wednesday at the age of 88.
TRUMP GREENLAND– The United States and NATO have reached an agreement on Greenland and Arctic security following talks between Donald Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Davos. There are no details yet, some media sources claim that NATO will build new military bases on Greenland. President Trump has meanwhile announced the US will not impose further tariffs on European partners. EU leaders are now preparing for an emergency summit in Brussels today to discuss Greenland and transatlantic relations with the US.
TRUMP PEACE COUNCIL – President Trump is launching his new international peace council in Davos today. It is supposed to resolve global conflicts, with Israel, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Argentina signed up. France and Norway have declined.
UKRAINE WAR – Talks continue on a Ukraine ceasefire with US envoy Steve Witkoff meeting Russian officials in Moscow, while parallel discussions are taking place in Davos between President Zelensky, Trump and NATO today.
WWII BOMB – Over 6000 residents are being evacuated from Aachen city centre today after a Second World War bomb was discovered at a construction site.Schools and the train station remain closed today.
FOOTBALL – Bayern Munich secured a top-eight Champions League finish with a 2-0 win over Union Saint-Gilloise. Eintracht Frankfurt have been eliminated after losing 3-2 to Qarabag. In other results from last night’s matches Liverpool eased to a 3-0 win in Marseille, Newcastle won 3-0 over PSV, and Slavia Prague lost 2-4 to Barcelona.
HANDBALL – Germany face Portugal this afternoon at the European Championships, with Spain playing Norway and France taking on Denmark this evening.
TENNIS – Madison Keys has reached the third round in her defence of the Australian Open, where men’s title-holder Jannik Sinner is also in action later. Novak Djokovic is another big name gracing Melbourne Park on day five, playing Francesco Maestrelli of Italy.
Today will be dry, though freezing fog during the morning may make driving conditions more difficult in places. By the afternoon, sunshine should begin to break through the haze, before thicker cloud moves in overnight, keeping temperatures slightly above freezing as we head towards the weekend. In terms of temperatures, we can expect lows of –3°C this morning, rising to a high of 5°C in the afternoon.
