
TRIPARTITE TALKS – Prime Minister Luc Frieden described yesterday’s tripartite talks as intense but constructive. Negotiations centred on energy prices, housing, and trade union demands to raise the minimum wage. Frieden acknowledged the difficulty of bridging the gap between employees and businesses but said the government remains committed to finding a compromise. Ministers are meeting again this morning, with new proposals expected in the afternoon.
EU MIGRATION & ASYLUM PACT – EU interior and justice ministers are meeting in Luxembourg today and tomorrow to discuss implementation of the asylum and migration pact and the future status of Ukrainian refugees. Luxembourg is represented by Interior Minister Léon Gloden.
NUCLEAR EXCERCISE – Luxembourg is taking part in the cross-border Cattenom nuclear exercise today and tomorrow, with four bodies active on the Luxembourg side. They will cover technical assessment, crisis coordination, public communication, and liaison with French authorities. The LU Alert system will not be tested, but people near the French border may receive a test alert from France's FR Alert system.
PETITIONS ONLINE – 17 new petitions have gone online. They include: allowing dogs up to 12kg in plane cabins, a bottle and can deposit system, weekly anti-violence classes in schools and legalising dash cams in cars. 5,500 signatures trigger a public debate in parliament.
DEADLY ACCIDENT – A woman has died in Germany near the Luxembourg border after her car crossed into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a lorry. The crash happened near Palzem, across the Moselle from Remich. Her vehicle rolled and came to rest on its roof. The lorry driver suffered minor injuries. The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
IRAN WAR – Iranian drones struck Kuwait, including the international airport, killing one and injuring more than 60 people. Tehran called it retaliation for recent US strikes; President Trump claims Iran has agreed not to pursue nuclear weapons.
LEBANON CEASEFIRE – Israel and Lebanon have agreed in Washington to implement a ceasefire, contingent on Hezbollah halting attacks on Israel. A ceasefire has technically been in place since 17 April, but Israel and Hezbollah continue to exchange fire daily. Hezbollah, backed by Iran, is refusing a formal ceasefire or negotiations.
EU ACCESSION – EU accession talks with Moldova and Ukraine are set to begin after Hungary's new Prime Minister Peter Magyar lifted his country's blockade. Formal negotiations could open on the sidelines of a ministerial meeting in Luxembourg on 15 June. Talks are expected to take years, with no guarantee of success.
FOOTBALL – Luxembourg fell to a 1-0 defeat against Italy in a friendly match at the Stade de Luxembourg yesterday. Despite a courageous performance from the Red Lions, the Italian side – fielding 19 uncapped players – proved clinical when it counted. The next match is against Albania on June 6.
The Netherlands lost their final World Cup warm-up 1-0 to Algeria in Rotterdam. The tournament itself gets underway in the United States, Mexico, and Canada in exactly one week.
TENNIS – Aryna Sabalenka's bid for a first French Open title was left in tatters as she fell apart in a bizarre defeat by Russian 25th seed Diana Shnaider in the quarter-finals while World number 114 Maja Chwalinska continued her stunning French Open run to get through. In the men, Flavio Cobolli beat fourth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime to reach the semi-finals, guaranteeing an Italian man in Sunday's final. Cobolli will face compatriot Matteo Arnaldi on Friday in what will be the first all-Italian men's semi-final in Grand Slam history.
