TRAIN CANCELLATION – A technical problem between Clervaux and Troisvierges means no trains are running between Luxembourg City and Gouvy in either direction. CFL maintenance teams are working on site, with normal traffic expected to resume from 10am. Replacement buses are running between Clervaux and Troisvierges.
ROAD ACCIDENTS – Rescue services are reporting a bus and car collided between Canach and Oetrange yesterday evening, injuring two people; emergency responders, including an Air Rescue doctor, attended the scene.
A separate car accident between Bech and Berbourg left one person injured around 8pm, and a roof fire in Gostingen last night brought fire crews from Canach, Flaxweiler and Remich, though there were no injuries, only material damage.
LUXEMBOURG UNIVERSITY – The University of Luxembourg is marking the start of the new academic year, with 2,800 new enrolments this year – around 4% more than last year – although the figure could still shift slightly in the coming weeks and months.
SINGLE PARENT TAXATION – The government's proposed tax reform will lower the tax burden for all single parents, regardless of income, once the current tax classes are merged into a single new system from 2028. Finance Minister Gilles Roth says the change includes a boost to the single-parent tax credit.
UKRAINE WAR – Russia struck a train near Poland's border shortly after a diplomatic train carrying former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and other European officials passed through the same station. No casualties were reported. Ukraine's president says Moscow deliberately targeted the locomotive, while Poland's prime minister has warned Russia could escalate the war further in the coming weeks.
SWEDEN ELECTION – Sweden's election result remains unclear, but this morning's trend points to a win for the Social Democrats and their allies under Magdalena Andersson, with the latest projections giving them 176 of the 349 seats. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson's conservative bloc looks set to lose three seats. A clearer picture is expected later today.
LOCAL ELECTION – In the German state of Lower Saxony, local election projections show the CDU losing ground but remaining the largest party ahead of the SPD, which is also expected to slip slightly. The AfD looks set for the biggest gains, overtaking the Greens.
ARCTIC SUMMIT – EU leaders are meeting for an Arctic summit in Rovaniemi, Finland, focused on a new strategy for the region amid growing geopolitical competition from Russia, China, and the US. Council President Antonio Costa and foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas are attending, along with German Chancellor Merz, Polish Prime Minister Tusk, and several Nordic leaders.
FRANCE ELECTION – Marine Le Pen launched her French presidential campaign yesterday in Hénin-Beaumont, seven months ahead of the election, under the slogan priority for the French. She is pledging preferential access to housing for French nationals and a rollback of environmental rules. Her candidacy is expected to go ahead even if an appeals court rules against her in the EU funds misuse case before the election. She currently leads polls with 34 to 36%, well ahead of Édouard Philippe and Jean-Luc Mélenchon.
FOOTBALL – In the national football league, Strassen remain the only team with a maximum 21 points after seven games. UNA won 2-1 away at Mondorf in the top match, Mondorf's first defeat of the season. Champions Bissen won 6-0 at Rumelange, and Walferdange beat Hesperange 3-0, with Swift Hesperange still unbeaten after seven games. In the Ehrenpromotion, Rodange stay top after a 1-1 draw with Bettembourg.
In international football, on the third matchday of the German Bundesliga, Bayern beat Elversberg 2-1, while Leipzig thrashed HSV 5-0. In England, Manchester City won the derby against United 1-0. In France, PSG beat Brest 1-0.
TENNIS – Alexander Zverev held off Ben Shelton to win the US Open on Sunday, capturing the second Grand Slam of his career just months after winning the French Open. The top-seeded German triumphed 6-3, 7-6 (7/2), 5-7, 6-2.
CYCLING – Spanish rider Enric Mas has won his first Vuelta a Espana title, holding off four-time champion Primoz Roglic to become the first Spaniard to triumph since Alberto Contador in 2014.
FORMULA 1 – Kimi Antonelli has extended his championship lead to 81 points, winning the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid ahead of Max Verstappen and Lando Norris.
