
WAGE INDEXATION – The national statistics institute STATEC has confirmed a 2.5% wage indexation will take effect from today, after the half-yearly inflation average crossed the required threshold. Salaries and pensions across the country will rise accordingly.
ROAD ACCIDENT – A 37-year-old man has died after his pick-up truck left the road and struck a tree on the N12 between Derenbach and Wincrange on Sunday morning. The cause of the crash has not yet been determined.
WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY – Yesterday was World No Tobacco Day – marked annually since 1987. A recent study found that 31% of people in Luxembourg smoke regularly or occasionally, rising to 41% among 16–24-year-olds. The head of the Cancer Foundation says those numbers are not falling and warns that new nicotine products are drawing in young people, potentially acting as a gateway to cigarettes.
TRAM EXPANSION – The tram network is set to expand into Kirchberg by 2030, with a first section along Boulevard Adenauer due to open in August 2027 ahead of the European School year.
MIDDLE EAST CONFLICT – President Trump has requested changes to a proposed US-Iran ceasefire deal, according to US media reports. The edits reportedly concern the Strait of Hormuz and the removal of highly enriched uranium. Iran's chief negotiator has warned Tehran will not sign any agreement unless Iranian rights are fully guaranteed.
Israeli forces have seized Beaufort Castle in southern Lebanon as fighting with Hezbollah intensifies. Eight people were killed and 19 injured in an Israeli strike. Lebanon's president accuses Israel of trying to destroy the south of the country. French President Macron says the escalation is unjustifiable, and France is calling for the UN Security Council to convene. A ceasefire has technically been in place since mid-April.
COLOMBIA ELECTION – Colombia's presidential election goes to a second round on 21 June, with right-wing candidate Abelardo de la Espriella on 44% against left-wing senator Ivan Cepeda with 41%.
DUA LIPA MARRIES – Pop star Dua Lipa has married British actor Callum Turner in a low-key civil ceremony in London, according to media reports. The couple reportedly plan to follow the occasion with a three-day celebration in Sicily.
FOOTBALL – Paris Saint-Germain have been welcomed home with a victory parade through the French capital after winning their second consecutive Champions League title. The club beat Arsenal on penalties in Budapest on Saturday night and were received by President Macron before a final celebration at their Parc des Princes stadium. Sunday's festivities followed a night of unrest in Paris and other cities, in which hundreds of people were arrested and dozens of police officers injured.
In Luxembourg football, Wiltz stay in the top flight after beating Mamer 5-4 on penalties. Biwer are promoted to the First Division after a 4-1 win over Larochette.
And in World Cup warm-up friendlies, Germany beat Finland 4-0, Mexico beat Australia 1-0, the United States beat Senegal 3-2, and Poland lost 2-0 to Ukraine.
CYCLING – Jonas Vingegaard has won the Giro d'Italia, becoming only the eighth rider in history to complete cycling's triple crown of Tour de France, Vuelta, and Giro. The Dane dominated the race, taking five stage wins. Jonathan Milan claimed the final sprint stage in Rome on Sunday.
TENNIS – World number one Aryna Sabalenka faces Naomi Osaka in a night match at the French Open today, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake. Osaka has reached the last sixteen in Paris for the first time in her career. In the men's draw, Canadian sixth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime bids for a first French Open quarter-final after top seed Jannik Sinner's shock exit.
