Trams have been back on the streets of Luxembourg City since 2017, currently running between Cloche d'Or and the airport. From 2030, they will also serve Boulevard Adenauer in Kirchberg.

Work to extend the tram line in Kirchberg has been under way since February 2025, focused on Boulevard Adenauer.

The first section of the extension, measuring just over two kilometres between the Red Bridge and the European School, is due to open in time for the start of the school year in August 2027. According to Luxtram Director General Helge Dorstewitz, the project marks the first step towards a broader tram network in Kirchberg, with future phases set to connect districts such as Kuebebierg and Laangfur.

Subject to receiving the necessary authorisations, Luxtram plans to connect the new section to the existing line near Pfaffenthal at the end of July or beginning of August this year. Dorstewitz explained that the works will involve installing switches to allow trams to move between the current route and the future extension.

The aim is to wrap up all the works within four years, by the end of 2030.

There are currently 33 trams in service across the network, with 41 more to be needed in the future. Around 30 new drivers are also being sought.

More than 125,000 people use the tram on a typical weekday, with the line running between Findel and Cloche d'Or since March 2025. Last year, about 35 million journeys were made on the service.

Dorstewitz noted that increasing numbers of air travellers are choosing the tram to reach the airport. He pointed out that the first service now departs shortly before 4am, allowing passengers to catch some of the earliest morning flights.

A new tram depot is also set to be built at Cloche d'Or, with construction work expected to begin in early July.
