DIRECT US FLIGHT – Talks are underway on reviving a direct flight between Luxembourg and the US, the first since Icelandair and Luxair both abandoned the route over 25 years ago. US Ambassador Stacey Feinberg says it's been a priority since she arrived, with discussions ongoing between both governments. Ministers and Luxair have welcomed the idea, but details remain confidential until an official announcement.
FOREST ACCIDENT – A person seriously injured after a tree branch struck them during a forest walk in Berdorf last Thursday has died in hospital. Police confirmed the death occurred over the weekend.
MISSING PERSON – Police are searching for 16-year-old Scott Akpene, missing since 19 July. He's described as between 1.80 and 1.90 metres tall, slim, with black hair. Anyone with information is asked to contact Dudelange police.
SWIMMING BAN – Swimming is now banned at the upper lake in Weiswampach after water quality analyses confirmed a significant bloom of cyanobacteria, commonly known as blue-green algae. Contact with contaminated water may lead to symptoms ranging from mild skin irritation to headaches, burning sensations, and nausea.
FRANCE WILDFIRES – New wildfires have broken out in the Bordeaux region, with fires partly out of control again due to a new heatwave, and new blazes starting in at least 14 locations. Local authorities say they're fighting "tree by tree" against the flames, with nearly 2,800 firefighters, 23 water bombers, and over 1,400 police deployed. 110 firefighters have been injured so far, and a number of houses destroyed.
JAPAN EARTHQUAKE – Japan's earthquake has killed at least 13 people, while rescuers are still working to reach survivors. The 7.1-magnitude quake struck the southwestern region on Kyushu island on Tuesday afternoon, causing widespread damage, sparking fires, and leaving tens of thousands of homes without power.
UKRAINE TRUMP – Ukrainian President Zelensky says Donald Trump has agreed to give Ukraine licenses to produce Patriot air defence interceptors, following a "good meeting" between the two at the White House. Meanwhile, the US Senate has voted to advance sweeping sanctions legislation targeting Russia's energy revenues. The bill would impose sanctions on Russian officials, oligarchs, and financial institutions, as well as the shadow fleet used to evade oil export restrictions.
MIDDLE EAST CONFLICT – The Middle East conflict has escalated again, with Iran reportedly launching a surprise attack despite a ceasefire. The US military says all missiles were intercepted. It came as Israeli PM Netanyahu met President Trump in Washington for the first time since the Iran war began, with Netanyahu saying afterwards both leaders share the goal of preventing Iran from building a nuclear bomb. Overnight, the US and Saudi Arabia jointly struck Iran linked terrorist groups in Iraq, with deaths and injuries reported.
ATHLETICS – Emmanuel Eseme stormed through torrential rain in Glasgow to claim Commonwealth Games gold for Cameroon in the 100m in a new Games record time of 9.83 seconds. And Zoe Hobbs produced a remarkable run in 10.93 seconds to win the women's 100m final at the Commonwealth Games for New Zealand.
CYCLING – The Tour of Denmark gets under way, with five stages being raced until Sunday. Today's stage covers 198 kilometres from Aalborg and back, with Luxembourg's Mathieu Kockelmann also taking part.
FOOTBALL – Roberto Mancini has been named the head coach of Italy's national team for a second time, tasked with revitalising the Azzurri who have missed out on the last three World Cups. The 61-year-old Mancini was previously Italy boss from 2018 until 2023, leading them to the Euro 2020 title.
