
FRIEDEN GREENLAND – Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Luc Frieden has voiced solidarity with Denmark over Greenland, following US President Trump’s threats to seize the territory. Speaking after an EU summit in Brussels, Frieden told RTL that Europe must stand firm on its principles.
LUXAIR EMERGENCY LANDING – A Luxair flight was forced to make an emergency landing in Nice yesterday after a landing gear sensor malfunction. All 74 passengers and crew are safe. According to Luxair General Director Gilles Feith, both pilots and passengers remained calm throughout the stressful situation.
SURGEON ALLEGATIONS – Luxembourg’s Health Minister has confirmed a surgeon at Robert Schuman Hospital may continue consultations but has been banned from performing operations, following complaints from colleagues at another hospital. They have accused the surgeon of performing unnecessary knee operations.
MURDER APPEAL – Three people jailed for life in December for murdering a Luxembourg resident in Portugal have lodged an appeal. The victim’s girlfriend, her mother, and her partner were convicted of killing the man during a holiday in 2021. A date for the appeal hearing has not yet been set.
UKRAINE TALKS – Delegations from Ukraine, the US, and Russia are meeting in Abu Dhabi today in the first three-way talks since the war began. The discussions follow yesterday’s meeting between Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
FRANCE BUDGET – France’s government faces another vote of no-confidence today after Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu pushed through budget measures without parliamentary approval. The vote is expected to fail as Socialists will back the minority government.
SPAIN TRAIN CRASH – The death toll from Sunday’s train crash in Spain has risen to 45, with two more bodies recovered. Over 120 people were injured. The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
OSCAR NOMINATIONS – The Oscar nominations are in for the 98th Academy Awards, with Ryan Coogler’s Sinners receiving a record 16 nominations. Two Luxembourgish co-productions were also nominated, with It was Just an Accident, an Iranian/Luxembourgish/French co-production receiving two nods, and Two People Exchanging Saliva nominated in the live-action short film category.
FOOTBALL – In football’s Europa League, Lyon and Aston Villa have secured their places in the last 16. Stuttgart lost 2-0 in Rome, whilst Porto could only manage a 1-1 draw in Pilsen.
The 19th matchday in the German Bundesliga kicks off today, with the Hamburg Derby between St Pauli and Hamburger SV. In France we will see Auxerre taking on Paris Saint-Germain.
HANDBALL – European Championship, Germany beat Portugal 32-30, Denmark defeated France 32-29, and Norway edged Spain 35-34. Among today’s matches Sweden is playing against Slovenia.
SKIING – The men’s Super-G takes place in Kitzbühel at noon today, with the legendary Hahnenkamm downhill scheduled for tomorrow.
BASKETBALL – Luxembourgish basketball player Joyce Isi Etute has announced that she will join the prestigious University of Texas at Austin next season. The promising young athlete, who currently balances her studies and basketball at IMG Academy, had received numerous offers from top U.S. universities.
