One of Luxembourg’s most forward-thinking bands is stepping back into the spotlight. On 12 December, Low Density Corporation headline The Flying Dutchman in Beaufort, marking a renewed chapter for a group long regarded as pioneers of the country’s trip-pop and alternative scene. The night also features a full live set from electro-soul shapeshifter Them Lights, plus warm-up and after-party selections from Dr. Gonzo.

Low Density Corporation formed in the late 1990s and quickly stood apart from the dominant pop and rock landscape in Luxembourg. Frontman and lyricist Rocco Russo and producer Olivier Toth carved out a sound that blended trip-hop atmosphere, alternative edge and a futuristic pop sensibility. Their debut EP in 1999 introduced striking early tracks such as Ode to my Stupidity and Disconnected, songs that broke sharply from the blues-leaning trends of the era and hinted at a wider creative ambition.

Their second album, Trash, arrived in 2003 after years of experimentation and lineup changes. What emerged was a more refined and intentional sound, the result of a meticulous writing process led by Rocco and Olivier. Critics sometimes described the music as overly polished, but the band embraced that precision as an artistic statement, pushing melodic structures and programmed textures into new territory. Onstage, they earned a reputation for powerful, tightly built performances that paired programmed samples with live instrumentation long before it became commonplace.

Lyrically, Rocco’s focus on futurism, technology and existential questions resonated well beyond Luxembourg’s borders, helping the band find audiences across Europe. Their influences ranged from 80s pop icons like Duran Duran and Depeche Mode to trip-hop, film scores and even Japanese manga samples, all folded into a distinctive sound.

After a 15-year pause to pursue other projects, Low Density Corporation have reunited. The current lineup brings together long-time collaborators drummer Gilles Wagner and bassist Gilles Loes, with the addition of vocalist Faye Reiser, whose ethereal tone adds a new dimension to the band’s evolving sound.

Joining them on the bill is THEM LIGHTS, the solo project of producer, singer and multi-instrumentalist Sacha Hanlet. Known to many as the drummer of math-rock outfit Mutiny on the Bounty, Hanlet shifts into a different sonic world here, merging brooding electronica, cinematic synths and RnB-infused vocals. Tracks like Estanque show off his ability to build atmosphere and tension, moving from delicate falsetto to a soaring, hook-driven chorus. THEM LIGHTS also places strong emphasis on visual identity, shaped in part by Hanlet’s background as a lighting designer and inspired by the dreamlike aesthetics of 1980s pop culture.

The Flying Dutchman show brings these two inventive acts together for one of the winter’s most distinctive live lineups.
