TRIPARTITE TALKS – Senningen Castle hosted the opening day of Luxembourg's Tripartite talks yesterday, bringing together government, trade unions, and employers. Discussions covered energy prices and purchasing power. Prime Minister Luc Frieden indicated tax measures could be on the table. Both unions and employers described the talks as constructive.

PORTUGAL FLIGHTS – Luxair has postponed its flights to Lisbon and Porto today due to a general strike in Portugal. Those services will now operate tomorrow, Thursday 4 June. Affected passengers will be automatically rebooked. Flights to Faro and Funchal are going ahead as planned, though delays are possible.

DIESEL PRICES Diesel prices at the pump are rising by 5.2 cents from today, bringing the cost to €1.78 per litre. Heating oil also goes up by 5 cents to €1.22. Petrol prices remain unchanged.

World

GERMANY HOSTAGE DRAMA – A hostage drama unfolded in Dortmund yesterday evening after a man caused a disturbance in a restaurant. When police moved to detain him, he opened fire on an officer, leaving them slightly injured, before barricading himself in a flat with his three children. The 51-year-old surrendered early this morning. No further details about the background are yet available.

EU TECH – The European Commission is today presenting a package of legislative proposals aimed at making Europe more technologically independent, covering the areas of cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and microchips.

IRAN WAR – US President Trump has dismissed as fake news reports that negotiations with Iran have stalled, insisting talks are continuing without interruption. Secretary of State Marco Rubio says Iran is now prepared to negotiate over its nuclear programme, something Tehran had always previously refused. Rubio says the unblocking of the Strait of Hormuz is the key condition. Mutual attacks were however reported again this morning.

LEBANON PEACE TALKSPeace talks between Israel and Lebanon are continuing, with representatives from both sides meeting in Washington. Discussions focused primarily on the situation around Beirut, with a further round expected to address an Israeli troop withdrawal and a ceasefire.

JAPAN TYPHOONA typhoon alert is in place for Tokyo as a tropical storm moves in from the south of Japan, where it has already injured around 15 people. Severe flooding is forecast, schools are closed, and hundreds of flights have been cancelled.

Sport

FOOTBALL – Luxembourg's Red Lions take on Italy in a friendly at the Stade de Luxembourg tonight. The two sides have met nine times before, with Italy winning eight and the only exception a 1-1draw, the last time they faced each other 12 years ago. Italy arrive in poor form, having failed to qualify for this summer's World Cup for the third consecutive time. You can watch the match live with English commentary on RTLToday.lu from 8.45pm.

Belgium beat Croatia 2-0 in a World Cup warm-up match yesterday.

TENNIS – At the French Open, world number one Aryna Sabalenka faces Russian 25th seed Diana Shnaider for a place in the semi-finals today. In the other women's quarter-final, Anna Kalinskaya takes on Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska, who has been one of the stories of the tournament. In the men's draw,4 th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime faces Italian 10th seed Flavio Cobolli.

The storm is over but we are not really back to summer. The sky will be mostly covered throughout the day, and those clouds might even bring some rain – especially during the afternoon. The wind could also reach up to 30 km/h.
Temperatures start around 9–10°C, barely clearing the 20 °C mark at their highest.
