
FRIEDEN AT NORTH SEA SUMMIT – Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden joins European leaders in Hamburg today for the North Sea Summit. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is hosting the gathering to strengthen offshore wind cooperation and European energy security. Heads of government from Belgium, Denmark, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Norway are attending, along with NATO and European Commission representatives.
SURGEON SUSPENSION – Health Minister Martine Deprez has banned a surgeon at the Robert Schumann Hospital from practising for three months over accusations of unnecessary knee operations. A ministerial order describes the allegations as substantiated and plausible, raising suspicion that some of his surgical procedures could amount to “acts of a mutilating nature”, according to documents seen by RTL.
BABY FORMULA RECALL – Health authorities have recalled Nutrilon PROfutura 1 baby formula over contamination concerns. It is the second infant formula recall in Luxembourg in a week due to potential cereulide toxin presence, which can cause vomiting and diarrhoea.
LUXEMBOURG SONG CONTEST – Eva Marija will represent Luxembourg at the Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna after she won the national competition on Saturday, with an emotional performance of her song Mother Nature. Only 20 years old, Eva is the youngest candidate to win the public vote with 222 points.
CAR FESTIVAL – The annual Car Festival opened this weekend with over 90 garages showcasing new models. Industry leaders are reporting a growing demand for hybrid and electric vehicles, with customers prioritising features over price when choosing their next car.
US WINTER STORM – At least seven people have died as a massive winter storm batters the US from the Gulf Coast to the north-east. Over one million are without power and temperatures have plunged to -45°C in some parts of the country. A state of emergency has been declared in 12 US states.
MINNEAPOLIS SHOOTING – Thousands demonstrated in Minneapolis over the weekend after a second fatal shooting by immigration police. Former Presidents Bill Clinton and Barak Obama have urged Americans to defend their rights and protest. President Trump has called on Democratic governors and mayors to cooperate with his administration. Writing on Truth Social, he urged them to work with the government rather than splitting the country and provoking chaos and violence.
PHILIPPINES FERRY DISASTER – At least 15 people have died and 28 remain missing, after a ferry carrying more than 350 passengers sank in rough seas off the southern Philippines this morning. Rescue efforts are ongoing.
PARIS FASHION WEEK – The Paris Fashion Week begins today with 28 fashion houses showing over four days. Only 13 brands hold official Haute Couture accreditation, including Dior, Chanel, and Givenchy, with strict criteria requiring handmade, bespoke designs created in French workshops.
FOOTBALL – Some results from last night’s games: in German football, Freiburg beat Cologne 2-1 while Mönchen Gladbach lost 3-0 to Stuttgart. In the Premier League, Manchester United defeated Arsenal 3-2, and in Ligue 1 Metz were thrashed 5-2 by Lyon.
SKIING – US ski great Mikaela Shiffrin dominated the final World Cup slalom before the Winter Olympics on Sunday to claim a record ninth title in the discipline. She is now favourite for a second Olympic slalom gold at next month’s Milan-Cortina Games.
TENNIS – Carlos Alcaraz has powered into the Australian Open quarter-finals and Novak Djokovic joined him without hitting a ball as his opponent pulled out injured. Aryna Sabalenka surged through but Coco Gauff faces Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina.
AMERICAN FOOTBALL – The Super Bowl is set for 8th February. Seattle Seahawks will face the New England Patriots after beating the Los Angeles Rams 31-27 and the Patriots edged past the Denver Broncos 10-7.
