Nic Przeor joined the Sam Steen Show on RTL Today Radio this morning to talk through this year’s line-up, which runs from July 24th until August 20th and features a mix of cult favourites, emerging artists and heavier underground acts. “There’s basically going to be something happening almost every day,” Nic explained, with only two non-concert evenings across the festival’s 28-day run.

A Luxembourg summer tradition

Originally created as a response to the quieter summer months in Luxembourg, Congés Annulés has grown into one of the country’s most respected alternative music festivals.

Now in its 15th year, the festival has become known for introducing audiences to artists they might not otherwise discover, alongside the occasional cult reunion or hard-to-catch live act.

“It’s really about discovery,” Nic said, pointing towards this year’s blend of post-punk, indie, folk, psychedelic rock and experimental music.

Highlights from the line-up

This year’s opening night on July 24th features GANS, alongside Chris Imler and Sheebaba.

“GANS were really good at Out of the Crowd earlier this year,” Nic said. “Really energetic but catchy at the same time. Perfect opening night band.”

Other highlights across the month include:

  • Faraquet, returning to Europe for the first time in around 20 years
  • New Zealand indie cult favourites The Bats
  • Psychedelic rock outfit Frankie and the Witch Fingers
  • Black metal and post-rock innovators Deafheaven
  • Irish experimental folk act Milkweed
  • Rising indie-pop songwriter Alice Costelloe
  • Post-punk favourites Deadletter and Just Mustard

Nic also highlighted the importance of the festival’s showcase nights, which continue to spotlight Luxembourg artists and smaller underground scenes.

Fast-selling festival

Festival passes for this year’s edition sold out in just ten minutes after release, although individual tickets for concerts remain available.

“That was pretty crazy,” Nic admitted.

More than just one genre

One of the defining things about Congés Annulés remains its range.

“It’s not all heavy music,” Nic pointed out. “There’s folk, indie-pop, experimental stuff… loads of different things happening.”

That variety has helped the festival build a loyal audience over the years, turning August into one of the busiest months in Luxembourg’s live music calendar.

Last year's edition included acts like Sprints, Totorro, The Linda Lindas, Upchuck, and Sheebaba.
