ISRAEL STATE BONDS – Amnesty International says EU countries allowing trade in Israeli state bonds risk becoming complicit in genocide in Gaza. Its report names Luxembourg, where such trade is possible, with the EU prospectus regulated by the CSSF. Amnesty says the funds finance crimes against Palestinians, and is calling on Luxembourg to reconsider its position.
TRAM EXTENSION – The Chamber has approved the bill extending the tram line from Stäreplaz to the CHL hospital. The route will include a stop near the maternity hospital and a second stop in Strassen, on the site of the former Batiself store. Rapporteur Corinne Cahen presented the bill. First tests are planned for 2032, with services to the hospital expected the following year.
CHILD ALLOWANCES – From 1 January next year, allowances for families with children will go up. The bill was tabled at the respective Chamber committee on Monday morning. For a child up to 12, child benefit will climb by €45 a month, while for older children the increase comes to €60.
FUEL PRICES – Fuel has become more expensive in Luxembourg again. Diesel sees the biggest rise, up 4.9 cents to 1.853 euros a litre. Fuel oil rises 4.3 cents, to 1.342 euros. 98 octane petrol goes up 4.4 cents, to 1.938 euros a litre, while 95 octane rises the least, up 3.8 cents, to 1.764 euros.
IRAN WAR – US military aircraft have bombed targets in Iran again overnight, in raids lasting 5 hours. Air defence installations and drone and missile launch sites were targeted, according to local US command. It's the 10th consecutive night of American strikes. Iranian President Pezeshkian said yesterday his country is now in total war with the US, though diplomatic efforts continue towards a ceasefire, with Qatar, Pakistan and Egypt still involved.
UK PM – Just hours after being sworn in, new British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has announced his top team. The most striking move is the appointment of former defence secretary John Healey as chancellor. Healey had resigned under Keir Starmer in protest at his policies. Several ministers have been dropped from the new government, including justice secretary David Lammy and chancellor Rachel Reeves. Burnham held his first calls with other leaders yesterday, including US President Trump and German Chancellor Merz.
CHILE – Heavy rainfall in Chile has killed at least 10 people and destroyed or severely damaged over 1,000 homes. The government declared a state of emergency. Since last week, rain has lashed the typically arid northern regions of Coquimbo and Atacama, where such intense levels of precipitation are highly unusual.
CANADA TARIFFS – Donald Trump wants to hit Canada with further tariffs. Many goods entering the US could be taxed at 50%, which Trump says is a response to unfair treatment of American cars, alcohol and dairy products. Fish, energy products and fertiliser would be exempt. Trump also cites Canada's wildfire response, saying it's failing to act and worsening US air quality, as grounds for raising some tariffs further.
US MEXICAN DRUG LORD – The co-founder of one of Mexico's most powerful drug cartels has been sentenced to life in prison by a federal court in New York. Ismael Zambada, known as "El Mayo", was abducted in Mexico nearly 2 years ago and flown to the US. He was formerly the closest partner of Joaquin Guzman, known as "El Chapo", who is also serving time in the US. Their Sinaloa cartel was once the largest in Mexico.
FOOTBALL – An estimated two million fans lined the streets of Madrid on Monday to celebrate Spain's World Cup victory. The team paraded through the city on an open top bus, greeted by huge crowds waving Spanish flags and wearing national team shirts. The parade ended at Cibeles Square, where a concert marked the close of celebrations. Spain beat Argentina 1-0 in Sunday's final, winning the tournament for the second time.
Former Liverpool and England star Kevin Keegan has died aged 75 after battling cancer. Keegan, regarded as one of the greatest players of his generation, was diagnosed with stage four cancer and underwent treatment in January.
In the second qualifying round of the Conference League, Bissen play away tonight against Hungarian champions Györi ETO. Kick-off is at 19.45 at the Stade de Luxembourg. Should Bissen progress after the 2 legs, they'd face either FC Riga or Vardar Skopje, following yesterday's UEFA draw.
CYCLING – After yesterday's rest day, the Tour de France continues with stage 16, a 26 kilometre individual time trial from Evian to Thonon-les-Bains. Belgian time trial specialist Remco Evenepoel is favourite, he is 2nd overall, 5 minutes behind Tadej Pogacar.
