CHRISTMAS MARKET TRIAL – A trial is due to open later today into the death of a three-year-old boy at the capital's Christmas market in 2019. The child was killed when a two-tonne ice sculpture collapsed on him. Ten people, including staff from the city's tourist office and the firm that made the sculpture, are facing charges of involuntary manslaughter. The trial is expected to last twelve days.

RACE DEATH – Prosecutors in Luxembourg have requested an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death of a race marshal killed during the European Hillrace in Eschdorf on Sunday. The 48-year-old woman was struck when a racing car left the track and broke through the safety barriers. She was airlifted to hospital but later died from her injuries. The driver and a second marshal sustained minor injuries.

EUROVISION 2026 – Luxembourg's Eurovision contestant Eva Marija has flown to Vienna ahead of the song contest. The singer departed from Findel airport on Sunday with her delegation and family. Luxembourg will compete in the second semi-final on Thursday 14 May.

World

IRAN WAR – President Trump says the United States will begin escorting stranded vessels out of the Strait of Hormuz from today, in what he's calling 'Project Freedom.' He warned that any interference with the operation will be dealt with “forcefully”.

EPC SUMMIT – European leaders are gathering in the Armenian capital Yerevan today for the eighth summit of the European Political Community. Hosted by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, the meeting brings together heads of government, among them French President Macron, British PM Keir Starmer, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Luc Frieden. The summit comes as Armenia moves to strengthen ties with the EU.

MET GALA – All eyes will be on New York tonight as celebrities descend on the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the annual Met Gala. The flagship fundraiser for the Costume Institute celebrates the relationship between fashion and art, with Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, and Venus Williams set to co-chair this year's event. Activists have plastered posters across New York calling for a boycott, targeting Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who is a lead sponsor of the event.

FORMULA 1 – Mercedes teenager Kimi Antonelli has claimed victory at the Miami Grand Prix, extending his lead at the top of the drivers' championship. The 19-year-old Italian is the first driver in Formula One history to win his first three races in a row from his first three pole positions.

FOOTBALL Tottenham have climbed out of the Premier League relegation zone with a vital 2-1 win over Aston Villa. In Spain, Vinicius Junior struck twice for Real Madrid in a 2-0 win over Espanyol on Sunday to make La Liga leaders Barcelona wait to be crowned Spanish champions. In the Bundesliga, Moenchengladbach beat Borussia Dortmund 1-0, Mainz won 2-1 over St Pauli, and Freiburg and Wolfsburg drew 1-1. Inter Milan are Italian champions after a 2-0 win against Parma.

TENNIS – Jannick Sinner has won the Madrid Open for the first time beating Alexander Zverev 6-1, 6-2 on Sunday.

After a few sunny weeks, May is starting off grey and wet, with moderate temperatures. The morning will bring some mist, before giving way to a cloudy sky with occasional light rain. As the afternoon progresses, a band of rain will move across the country from the southwest. Winds will be light to moderate at around 10–20 km/h.
