GERMANY BORDER CONTROLS – Fixed border controls between Germany and Luxembourg are to be removed. The checkpoint installations on the motorway near Trier will be dismantled, following an agreement between Luxembourg's Interior Minister Léon Gloden and his German counterpart Alexander Dobrindt. More flexible checks will instead take place at the Markusberg rest stop. The announcement came on the sidelines of a meeting of German-speaking interior ministers, held in Luxembourg yesterday.

TRIPARTITE MEETINGS – Prime Minister Luc Frieden has announced that the government, trade unions, and employer representatives will meet on 12 May. Further talks will take place before and after that date in preparation for an official tripartite meeting, although Frieden declined to specify the topics to be discussed during the meetings, citing respect for the social partners.

POLICE TRIALFour police officers are on trial at the district court of Diekirch, facing charges of violence in the line of duty and obstruction of justice. One officer allegedly punched a detainee at Luxembourg-Gare police station in May 2023. He admits striking the man, but claims it was with an open hand, something the forensic doctor disputes. The station commander faces obstruction charges for allegedly coaching a junior officer on what to write in his report. The trial continues this afternoon.

Meanwhile, the head of Eurogroup, Greek Finance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis is warning that the Hormuz blockade could trigger the worst energy crisis in history, worse than the 1970s oil shock.

KING CHARLES US – Britain’s King Charles addressed the US Congress in Washington last night, indirectly contradicting President Trump on several fronts. The King stressed the importance of strengthening NATO, and called for the same resolve on Ukraine as the Allies showed in the Second World War. The challenges ahead, he said, are too great for any one nation to face alone.
