Quick ReadsThursday

Stephen Lowe

Thursday was apoplectic with rage. ‘Stay inside, like a caged animal?’, not on your life.

Wet days were said to be ‘nice weather for ducks’, but had anyone every bothered to ask a duck for their opinion? Unlikely.

And, to put no lesser than the finest point on it, nobody had asked Thursday what the preferences were.

All that had happened was some ‘suits’ had gone on TV and said ‘stay home’ but ‘stay active’ and ‘buy stuff’ but ‘not too much’ and ‘we will all be fine if you are not outside too long’.

The day which was currently rolling out of bed was set to be the best the year had thrown out...thus far, and the officials were telling people to stay inside.

No.

Uh-Uh.

Fat chance.

Thursday was fed up of being told what to do. Wednesday was always getting invited to parties and Friday was a, how to put it...a bit of a Primadonna. What use were all the happy hours and two-for-one shots now?

As far as Thursday was concerned, people had used the fourth day as a utility day. Calling in sick willy-nilly after too many one’s for the road. Or using it as an extra bridging day, tagged onto to an already long weekend, where Monday might also be dragged in, due to a dose of a sudden ’24-hour tummy bug’ - (please actually use the hand gesture for inverted commas here, it adds to the nonsense).

For centuries Thursday had known their place. But, now, in this brave (sort of) new world, anything goes.

Thursday had watched all of the Gilmour Girls re-runs, had tried to watch some Scandi-drama that EVERYONE else loved but was near impenetrable and was going to get on the bike and put in some serious KM’s.

This WAS allowed, so long as no other people had the same idea, or desire to live.

Thursday slumped to the edge of the bed, half in and half out of some Lycra leggings. It didn’t feel right, this mighty little protestation.

The suits had seemed awfully serious. And there were a few rain clouds forming, and the tyres were a bit flat, and Thursday’s back was aching.

A bit.

So, as a compromise, Thursday was gonna get a tan on the legs this morning and top up the top half tomorrow.

The bike ride could wait till the weekend, when this was sure to be better.

Right?
