Z-Nation – Netflix
The zombie apocalypse is in its third year. With most of humanity dead, the living are clinging to the remnants of civilization, while trying to manage the zombies. No vaccine and no drug have been found against the virus, when one man, Murphy, an opportunistic and cowardly ex-con, is found to seemingly be immune to the bite of the dead.
A small team is tasked to escort him from New York to the last known functioning CDC research lab in California in order to develop a cure.
“Z Nation” is a Canadian show, meaning that it is on a much smaller Budget than “The Walking Dead” but despite cheaper production values the show manages to catch the viewer’s attention by showing a different kind of zombie – they’re fast and semi-intelligent – which makes for more action and thrills.
And more importantly, it doesn’t take itself too seriously, eschewing the trope of the hero fighting to keep his “humanity” in favor of showing how normal people survive, not because they “deserve” it – by having the higher moral ground or being more likeable - but because they are simply willing to do anything to stay alive
