Midge Maisel is a young, upper class Jewish American housewife living with her husband Joel and their two kids in Manhattan, New York in 1958. She has been supporting Joel, who works at a plastics company, in his dream to work as a stand-up comic by helping him write his jokes.
After his first performance ends in a disaster, he decides that his wife is holding him back and leaves her for his secretary. Furious and drunk, Midge goes back to the club where he performed and uses the stage to let loose on him and the rest of her family, being a roaring success with the audience and getting arrested for the “inappropriate” content of her set, thus ending up in jail.
Going to live with her parents, taking a job as a salesgirl in a department store, she secretly continues to do stand-up comedy, finding that she not only has a knack for it but that she needs the outlet for her frustrations.
“The Marvelous Mrs Maisel” has won numerous awards, being a comedy that comes across like a musical without music. The dialogue has a specific style and rythm, the costumes are candy-colored and the themes are modern. Yet, despite the fairy tale setup, there’s not necessarily going to be a happy end.
