Fleabag is a young woman living in London who doesn’t seem to like herself. Breaking up with her boyfriend, she goes from one one-nightstand to another and drinks too much. She antagonizes her sister and steals a sculpture from her father’s girlfriend, only to rile her.
It’s only after a few episodes that the viewer starts to understand the relationships between all the characters and, most importantly, what happened to make Fleabag hate herself.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who created the show, is brilliant as a woman who is unable to go on with her life after a traumatic event. One of the elements used to convey how alienated Fleabag is from herself is the breaking of the fourth wall, were the character turns to the camera, making the audience her ally in the way she views her own life. Watching herself as if watching a stranger.
Although not strictly a comedy, the show’s mostly dark humor comes from the interactions between the characters, where a word or a gesture tells everything about a relationship and can have devastating consequences for the people involved.
