1896. The new police commissioner of New York, Teddy Roosevelt, asks Dr Laszlo Kreizler to investigate a series of gruesome murders.
Dr Kreizler specializes in psychology, a very new science at the time. He and his good friend, John Moore, a newspaper illustrator, Sara Howard, the secretary to the police commissioner, and detectives Marcus and Lucius Isaacson will work together to unmask the serial killer by using modern methods like photography, psychology or forensic science.
Their investigation will be obstructed again and again by powerful people inside the police force and New York political circles, who don’t like their newfangled methods.
Costumes and sets are very well-made, the hunt for the killer is thrilling and sometimes creepy if not outright scary, as everything is kept together by the excellent actors evolving in a society on the brink of change, where women fight for their right to vote, immigrants and fugitives live in squalor while chasing a better life in the new world, all while those that profit from the system try desperately to keep the status quo.
