• The latest figures from Luxembourg show that 141 new cases of coronavirus were discovered over the last 24 hours. There were no new deaths.

• 241 coronavirus infections were detected in Luxembourg’s schools in the week between 12 and 18 July, compared to 165 cases the week before.

• Several vaccination centres around Luxembourg will start closing down soon as GPs begin administering Covid jabs at their own practices in August.

• Acting in accordance with data protection rules, the Ministry of Health does not currently cross-reference data between those infected and those vaccinated.

• Covid vaccine makers BioNTech and Pfizer said Wednesday they would produce their jab in South Africa from 2022, a first for the continent that could see much-needed immunisation drives pick up speed.

• Tens of millions of Bangladeshis defied a Covid-19 surge on Wednesday to join prayers in packed mosques and outdoor locations, as Muslims slaughtered record numbers of animals for the festival Eid al-Adha.

• The European Medicines Agency said Tuesday it had started a “rolling review” of France’s Sanofi coronavirus jab, which could lead to authorisation for use in the European Union. Meanwhile, people wanting to go to cinemas, museums, sporting matches and other cultural venues in France will have to show proof of Covid-19 vaccination or a negative test starting Wednesday

• Japan’s Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga has denied he was pressured by the International Olympic Committee into holding a Games that remains deeply unpopular as virus cases surge in Tokyo.

• Up to two-thirds of India‘s population may have been infected with Covid-19, a government study suggested on Tuesday.

• Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi sacked Tunisia’s health minister Faouzi Mehdi on Tuesday, without giving a clear reason.

• The German federal government has extended the country’s quarantine rules for travellers arriving from abroad beyond the summer holidays. Travellers must present a negative test, proof of vaccination or recovery, otherwise a 10-day quarantine is mandatory.
