EU LUXEMBOURGISH - Fernand Kartheiser of the ADR party wanted to give a speech in the European Parliament in Luxembourgish yesterday evening. But he was immediately stopped because he had to speak in an official EU language. The President of the European Parliament pointed out that the Luxembourgish language is not one of the 24 official languages of the Parliament. The ADR MEP then explained that his language should also be given that status and recognised by the parliament

MAN DIES - A 40-year-old man tragically died after being struck by a falling tree on a hiking trail in Lellig, in the east of the country on Sunday afternoon. The hiking trail is to be closed until further notice while the authorities investigate whether the tree suffered a sickness, as well as establishing the issue of responsibility.

AUTO FESTIVAL - Luxembourg’s car dealers’ association has announced the dates for the 61st edition of the annual Autofestival. The annual event will take place over ten days from 25 January to 3 February.

NEW BILL - The Ministry of Interior is currently working on a draft bill that defines the right of assembly and the conditions under which public protests can take place. However, the Tageblatt sharply criticised the draft bill on Monday for being a problematic text that leaves too much room for interpretation. Minister Gloden rejected the criticisms, stating that they referred to a previously drawn up draft law, and that the current Ministry has been working on an entirely new text

MIDDLE EAST CONFLICT – The Lebanese health ministry says four people have been killed in Israeli airstrikes near the country’s biggest hospital in Beirut. Israel said it struck a Hezbollah target nearby and the facility had not been hit. Meanwhile US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has left for the Middle East on a new push for an elusive Gaza ceasefire two weeks before US elections, seeing a new opportunity from Israel’s killing of Hamas’s leader. BRICS SUMMIT - Russian President Vladimir Putin is meeting several world leaders in the next few days including Chinese leader Xi Jinping, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Iran’s Masoud Pezeshkian. They are all meeting in the Russian city of Kazan today for the so-called BRICS summit, despite prior speculations that the Ukraine war and an international arrest warrant would isolate Putin. Among the guests is also UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who is hoping to take advantage of the opportunity to mediate in the Ukraine war.

HURRICANE OSCAR - Hurricane Oscar left six people dead after hitting Cuba over the weekend during a major power blackout. The country was still bathed in darkness on Sunday when Hurricane Oscar made landfall in the eastern part of the country as a Category 1 storm, causing several severe damage.

PERU TOLEDO SENTENCING - A Peruvian court has sentenced former president Alejandro Toledo to more than 20 years in prison for accepting multi-million-dollar bribes from a scandal-hit Brazilian construction conglomerate. Toledo, who is 78-years-old led the South American nation from 2001 to 2006.

LIAM PAYNE - Authorities uncovered evidence of substance abuse and drug paraphernalia in Payne’s hotel room. The singer had openly discussed his battle with addiction. Pop star Liam Payne had multiple drugs including crack cocaine and methamphetamine in his system when he fell to his death from a hotel balcony in Argentina, according to initial toxicology reports cited by US media on Monday.

FOOTBALL – It’s the start of the third matchday in the football Champions League. Among the games, Real Madrid will play against Borussia Dortmund. You can watch this match live on our website with live ticker commentary, starting at 9pm. Other matches include AC Milan vs Brugge, Juventus - Stuttgart, PSG vs Eindhoven and or Arsenal against Donetsk.

In other football news, Brazil superstar Neymar returned to action on Monday following more than a year out, appearing as a second-half substitute in his side’s gripping 5-4 win against Asian champions Al Ain in the UAE. The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain attacker had not played since injuring his left knee while on international duty in October last year.

RUGBY - Patrick Tuipulotu has been named All Blacks captain for the first time as they prepare to face Japan in Yokohama. New Zealand take on Eddie Jones’s Japan on Saturday before heading to Europe for Tests on successive weekends against England, Ireland, France and Italy.

Rugby Club Luxembourg (RCL) has confirmed that the remainder of their home matches in the 1. Bundesliga will be played at Luxembourg’s Stade Josy Barthel. Their first match at the stadium will take place on Saturday, 26 October, against four-time champions RG Heidelberg.
