Around 6,000 people gathered near the former Langerlo electricity centre to observe the destruction from a safe distance. Aside from the cooling towers, two chimneys were also brought down by force.

The explosions and destruction all went according to plan, municipal officials later announced. The entire area was successfully evacuated beforehand, and a specific location was designated to allow people to follow the detonation live.
