MANSLAUGHTER CHARGE - Following a serious altercation on Friday afternoon on a football pitch in Esch/Alzette, a 25-year-old man has died as a result of his serious injuries. According to preliminary findings published by the prosecutor’s office on Monday afternoon, the 25-year-old was carrying two knives at that time. Subsequently, several people on the pitch managed to chase and immobilise the attacker. According to the investigation, one of the people who helped pin down the attacker then took one of the knives and stabbed the man several times. The 22-year-old man has been charged with manslaughter.

GOVERNMENT REVENUE - Last year, the government took in more than €21 billion in taxes, a year-over-year increase of 7%. According to STATEC, GDP grew by 1.7% in 2022 and is expected to go up by 1.5% this year. The biggest plus in government revenue came through VAT last year. Similarly, revenue from household taxes and social contributions increased by 10%.Revenue from taxes related to funds, petrol, and tobacco stagnated last year, however. The same goes for business taxes.

DOCTOR BANNED - A medical practitioner from Luxembourg City has been banned from practicing for six months after he was found guilty of issuing fraudulent invoices. The gynaecologist, who specialises in fertility treatment and artificial insemination, was initially sentenced to a year-long ban, which was later amended to include a six-month suspension in the second instance. The accused was found guilty of falsifying invoices over a period spanning several years, thus taking money from particularly vulnerable patients seeking fertility assistance.

World

US SHOOTING - Just two days after 11 people were shot dead by a gunman near Los Angeles in California, there have been two new shootings in the north of the state. Police say 7 people have been killed and a 67-year-old Asian-American man has been taken into custody.

EU UKRAINE - The EU will support Ukraine with a further aid tranche of €500 million. This was confirmed yesterday at a council of EU foreign ministers in Brussels. In the main, weapons and ammunition will be purchased. With this, the EU effort since the beginning of the war has already risen to more than 3.5 billion.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF EDUCATION - The aid organization “Save the Children” has today launched an appeal saying that children in Ukraine have had to suffer massively from the war. Apart from the fact that their lives are in danger every day, access to an adequate education no longer exists in large parts of Ukraine. One school has been destroyed every other day since the start of the academic year in September.

OSCAR NOMINATIONS - The nominations for the Oscars will be announced in Los Angeles this afternoon. It is expected that «The Fabelmans» by Steven Spielberg, the comedy «The banshees of Inisherin» as well as «Avatar» will be up for several nominations. For Luxembourg, the film “Corsage” has the chance to be nominated in the best non-English language films. Vicky Krieps plays the main role as the Austrian empress Sissi but the scandal surrounding the other main actor, Florian Teichtmeister, could prevent such a nomination. He has been charged with possessing child pornography in Austria and will go on trial at the beginning of February.

TENNIS - Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina has cruised into her first Australian Open semi-final with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko earlier today. The 22nd seed will meet either American Jessica Pegula or Belarusian Victoria Azarenka for a place in the final. Karen Khachanov has reached his second consecutive Grand Slam semi-final when American Sebastian Korda retired hurt in the third set of their Australian Open quarter-final.Korda needed treatment on a wrist injury in the second set before calling it quits when losing 7-6 (7/5), 6-3, 3-0 to the Russian 18th seed on Rod Laver Arena.

LUXEMBOURG PROJECTS - €135 million: this is the amount in the new 5-year plan of the Ministry of Sports, for building new sports infrastructure or renovating old ones. This financing project is being discussed today in the relevant parliamentary committee. A provisional list currently includes 35 projects, including, the open-air swimming pools in Vianden and Wiltz, the construction or renovation of several sports halls as well as a national beach volleyball centre in Bissen.

Once the morning’s mists clear up, today should largely remain dry and overcast, with highs of around 4°C.It’s unlikely we’ll see more snowfall today, although those clouds seem to be sticking around. Morning temperatures will start off cold at -2 to 0 °C, rising to around 2-4 °C in the afternoon.
