Week of mental healthPandemic and lockdown have had major psychological impact on people

RTL Today
Saturday marked World Mental Health Day, and the last day of an awareness-raising campaign in Luxembourg around this topic.

The pandemic and resulting lockdown have had a considerable impact on the psychological well-being of people around the world, say mental health experts. Especially in crisis regions, for example Lebanon, where economic recessions, unemployment, homelessness, stress and ultimately a major explosion have led to dramatic consequences.

“The Lebanese population was drained both economically and psychologically, and then came the pandemic. An enormous explosion shattered any last feeling of safety, because they lost their homes,” says Christelle Madani, psychologist at the ICRC, the International Committee of the Red Cross.

The number of suicides has risen dramatically in Beirut. But has the pandemic influenced that in Luxembourg, too? It is too early to tell, according to psychologist Sacha Bachim. The population has, however, been pushed to their limits.

Robert Mardini, general director of the ICRC, adds: “More than one in five in a conflict zone suffer from mental heath problems - that is three times higher than the rest of the population.”

Earlier this week, the Luxembourgish Society of Psychiatrists, Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists and Psychotherapists had drawn attention to the lack of mental health professionals in Luxembourg.
