The compassionate story is making the rounds on social media,
Inhabitants of Lormi in the Mungeli district discovered the baby after hearing cries in the night, and reported it to authorities, who rushed to the scene. The girl was found without clothing, with her umbilical cord still attached.
The baby received care at the scene and was later transferred to The Child Line Project, the Indian Express reports. She was named Akanksha.
Police are searching for the family, and strict actions are expected.
There have been many cases of abandoned girls in India, who, because of their gender, are seen as a burden. Boys tend to live with their parents when they grow up to provide care support.
Last year, the Times of India reported that 90% of the 11 million abandoned children in India were girls.
