Luxembourg will participate in a large-scale nuclear safety and disaster response exercise at the Cattenom nuclear power plant on Tuesday, 4 June, and Wednesday, 5 June. Organised by the French authorities, the drill aims to test emergency procedures and cross-border coordination in the event of a nuclear incident.

As part of the exercise, French officials plan to use the FR-ALERT emergency notification system, meaning that a warning message will be sent via cell broadcast to mobile phones in the affected border region. Anyone present in the area with a switched-on smartphone may receive the alert, regardless of their mobile provider or place of residence.

The alert will be accompanied by a distinctive and loud signal. Authorities stress that this message is strictly part of the exercise and does not indicate a real emergency.

Residents are not required to take any action in response to the warning.
