
JAPAN VISIT – The Grand Duke is on a working visit to Japan, accompanied by Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel and Defence Minister Yuriko Backes. The programme includes a visit to the Luxembourg pavilion at the World Expo in Osaka, where Minister Xavier Bettel is meeting Japanese entrepreneurs and investors. Meanwhile, Defence Minister Backes will hold political talks aimed at strengthening cooperation in defence, mobility, and autonomous driving.
TRIER STABBING – A 26-year-old woman was found with serious stab wounds in an apartment in Trier on Sunday evening. According to German authorities, officers responded to an emergency call around 8.30pm and found the victim with serious stab injuries inside her apartment. She received immediate medical attention. Investigators suspect the woman’s 43-year-old partner is responsible. He has been on the run since Sunday evening and a manhunt is underway.
WINE MUSEUM – The long-awaited transformation of the wine museum in Ehnen is nearing completion. After seven years of renovation, the Wine House will reopen in August next year, offering a modern and interactive experience on Luxembourg’s wine heritage.
LIVERPOOL CAR RAMMING – British police say an incident in which a car ploughed into crowds at the victory parade for Liverpool football club is not connected to terrorism. At a press conference, officials said 27 people, including children, had been taken to hospital, two of whom suffered serious injuries. The 53-year-old British man has been arrested. Tens of thousands of people had turned out for what should have been jubilant celebrations to see Liverpool’s victory parade.
TESLA EU WOES – Industry data is showing that Tesla’s car sales in the European Union plunged over 50% in April. While sales of electric cars rose overall in the 27 EU nations, Tesla’s share fell dramatically amid the spotlight on Musk’s work with US President Donald Trump and the US company’s ageing range.
GAZA WAR – A controversial aid supply group, supported by the US and Israel, says it has delivered truck loads of food to so-called secure distribution sites in Gaza. The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation bypasses the United Nations, the major aid supplier to Palestinians, and uses American security contractors. According to health authorities in Gaza, the death toll from Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip since October 2023 has risen close to 54,000 people with close to 123,000 people injured.
EUTHANASIA IN FRANCE – French MPs are voting on a law today that would legalise euthanasia and assisted suicide. If passed, the right to die will be available to seriously and terminally ill people under strict conditions. Patients also have to be suffering physically or mentally on a permanent basis. A doctor can then prescribe a medication that leads to death independently. If this is no longer possible, a doctor or nurse will be allowed to administer the drug. Critics of the law point out that the new regulation could exert psychological pressure on sick people to end their lives.
KING CHARLES IN CANADA – King Charles will deliver a significant speech in Canada’s parliament today. The British monarch is expected to offer his support in the country’s dispute with Donald Trump.
FOOTBALL – The football world has united after 27 people were hospitalised when a car ploughed into a packed crowd celebrating Liverpool winning the Premier League. Cristiano Ronaldo has indicated that he could leave Al Nassr after declaring that a “chapter is over” hours after the Saudi Pro League finished. Ronaldo’s contract with the Saudi club ends this summer. A special transfer window runs from 1–10 June to allow the 32 clubs involved in the Club World Cup to sign players.
TENNIS – Carlos Alcaraz has powered into the French Open second round with a resounding win to start his title defence, while world number one Jannik Sinner and three-time defending women’s champion Iga Swiatek also progressed at Roland Garros.
SMALL GAMES – The 20th Games of the Small States were officially launched in Andorra last night. Shortly before 11pm, the Games’ flame was lit inside Andorra’s national football stadium in a festive ceremony that marked the official start of the competition. As the delegations entered the stadium, Team Luxembourg made its appearance third in line, proudly led by flag bearers Alex Kirsch and Magaly Meynadier.
