A video of the incident has since made its rounds on social media and caused outrage across France.

The firefighter in question was busy extinguishing a pile of burning wood pallets on Rue Alexandre-Dumas when the protester began pushing him around to prevent the flames from being put out. The woman also punched the firefighter twice.

Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin has since said that the firefighter was not injured and that authorities identified and checked the woman responsible for the altercation.

The Paris fire brigade has also addressed the incident in a tweet, noting that it is incomprehensible how on-duty firefighters can be assaulted while protecting the people and property of the City and ensuring a safe protest.

Local police joined in condemning any violence towards firefighters on social media. Grégory Allione, president of the French Firefighter Federation, has called for the attacker to be punished.
