What went through the mind of this motorist to put so many people in danger? A video made by a Belgian couple on the E40 motorway has gone viral in Belgium.
In the footage, a driver can be seen trying to cut them off several times and threatening them with an iron bar. All of this on the busy road between Germany and the Belgian coast.
According to Belgian media, which broadcast the scene filmed by the couple, the incident took place on Wednesday.
As the couple were leaving for a long weekend, they were chased for several kilometres by a driver who appears to have been enraged by an overtaking manoeuvre.
Talking to the Flemish newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws, the chased driver, who actually works as a driving instructor, stated that he wanted to overtake a vehicle in front of him in the middle lane. As he did not see anyone coming up behind him, he started the manoeuvre. But “suddenly”, he explained, he saw a windscreen in his rear-view mirror. “That was all”, he concluded.
The man in the other vehicle, who was visibly angry, tried several times to run them off the road. According to the first driver, he tried to push them against the safety rail “four times in total”, adding that he was “just crazy”.
After several kilometres of dangerous manoeuvres, the driver managed to pin the other couple’s car along the safety rail. This was the moment he chose to get out of his car armed with an iron bar and rush at them. Fortunately, the couple were able to reverse their car and get away from the attacker.
The two Belgians were able to contact the police while driving. Other motorists were apparently hit by the driver during his reckless manoeuvres. “I’m always on the road and I’ve never seen anything like this,” the driving instructor said, adding that the man “must have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol” as he could not see any other explanation.
The police has launched an investigation into the incident.
