
BOMBER’S AFFAIR – In a new development in the long-running Bomber’s Affair, known as ‘Bommeleeër’ in Luxembourgish, eight former officials will face trial for false testimony, nearly 40 years after the initial bombings in Luxembourg. The five former Gendarmerie officers are no longer facing prosecution for obstruction of justice, as this charge has been dropped by the pre-trial Chamber of the Court of Appeals. They will now only respond to accusations of false testimony.
ANIMAL SHELTER FIRE – A fire broke out at the Schifflange animal shelter on Tuesday evening, prompting a call for assistance. While the animals are safe, the shelter’s food supplies, kitchen, and dog cages have been rendered unusable. The Schifflange Animal Protection Association (APAS) is appealing to the public for support, asking for donations of food bowls, litter trays, crates, and cat food.
GOOSTY BANKRUPTSY – The delivery platform Goosty, which provided food delivery services for restaurants in Luxembourg, has filed for bankruptcy, leaving hundreds of restaurants facing outstanding payments for delivered orders. Some restaurants are facing outstanding bills of up to €6,000 for food that was delivered and paid for by customers but never reached the restaurant owners.
LOLLIPOP RECALL – Parents and caregivers are advised to check for ‘Moomin’ lollipops following a recall by the Luxembourg Veterinary and Food Administration due to safety concerns. The safety risk arises from the lollipops’ size, hardness, and shape. The recalled lollipops were sold at various retail locations throughout Luxembourg.
SPAIN FLOODS – Emergency teams in Spain are searching for those still missing after floods hit, killing at least 95 people. Hundreds of soldiers have been sent to Valencia to help with the search and rescue mission after parts of the region recorded a year’s rain within hours.
NORTH KOREA MISSILE – A suspected intercontinental missile fired by North Korea is reported to have flown higher and for longer than previous tests. Its estimated flying time was nearly 90 minutes, travelling more than 1,000km, before landing near Japan, outside the country’s territorial waters. The launch came just hours after US and South Korean defence chiefs called on Pyongyang to withdraw its troops from Russia, warning that North Korean soldiers in Russian uniforms were being deployed for possible action against Ukraine.
MIDDLE EAST CONFLICT – Lebanon’s prime minister has expressed hope that a ceasefire deal with Israel could be announced withing days. Speaking to broadcaster Al-Jadeed, Najib Mikati said US envoy Amos Hochstein had suggested that a ceasefire would be possible in the coming days, even before the American elections next Tuesday. There is still no confirmation from Hezbollah, Israel, or the United States. Meanwhile Israeli strikes have killed 19 people, including eight women around Lebanon’s eastern city of Baalbek.
US ELECTIONS – Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Terminator star and former Republican governor of California has endorsed Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris, saying she was the only person to “turn the page” on Donald Trump’s divisiveness. With just days until the 5 November election, Schwarzenegger becomes the latest of dozens of prominent former Republicans -- including former vice president Dick Cheney – to endorse the Democratic candidate for president over Trump.
FRANCE EUTHANASIA – A French court has acquitted 78-year-old Bernard Pallot of murdering his incurably ill wife, ruling on a case that highlights France’s ongoing debate over euthanasia laws. Although France’s parliament has this year debated a controversial right-to-die bill, euthanasia – whereby someone helps a critically ill patient die – is illegal in France.
BASEBALL – The Los Angeles Dodgers produced a stunning fightback to defeat the New York Yankees and clinch the World Series with a dramatic 7-6 victory. This means the Dodgers have sealed their second Major League Baseball championship crown in five seasons to complete a 4-1 series victory.
FOOTBALL – Ruud van Nistelrooy enjoyed a winning start as interim Manchester United manager by beating Leicester 5-2 to reach the League Cup quarter-finals as Manchester City crashed out 2-1 to Tottenham last night. Arsenal and Liverpool were among the other sides to book their place in the last eight, but Chelsea were beaten 2-0 at Newcastle.
And in the German Cup, Jamal Musiala hit a first-half hat-trick as Bayern Munich won 4-0 at Mainz to move into the last 16.
TENNIS - Daniil Medvedev is still searching for his first ATP tournament victory this year after the world number five lost to Australia’s Alexei Popyrin for the first time in his career at the Paris Masters. Popyrin edged Medvedev 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (7/4) in a gripping second round match.
