A fire at the Schifflange animal shelter on Tuesday evening has left the facility in need of support.
A fire broke out at the Schifflange animal shelter on Tuesday evening, prompting a call for assistance. No animals were injured, but the shelter is in need of support to recover from the incident.
The Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS) received an alert about the fire on Rue de Hedange at approximately 7pm. Emergency crews from Esch-sur-Alzette and Schifflange swiftly brought the flames under control.
The Schifflange animal shelter expressed gratitude to all involved for their prompt response, stating that "a greater disaster has thus been avoided." While the animals are safe, the shelter's food supplies, kitchen, and dog cages have been rendered unusable.
In a show of solidarity, other shelters and animal protection associations quickly stepped in. For example, some dogs were taken to a shelter in Gasperich on Wednesday morning, while rodents were accommodated by the "Déieren an Nout" association. Additionally, "privaten Déiereschutz" is caring for several cats from the damaged shelter.
The Schifflange animal shelter shared a post on Facebook on Wednesday with a link to an Amazon wish list, as well as their bank details for donations.
Due to the fire, the shelter is unable to take in any new dogs, and visits will be suspended until Sunday while repairs are underway.
The Schifflange Animal Protection Association (APAS) is appealing to the public for support, asking for donations of food bowls, litter trays, crates, and cat food.
The organisation requests that individuals refrain from visiting the shelter without appointments for the time being. Contact details can be found on the Schifflange animal shelter's website.
