POST BOXES - The post office has launched a new campaign “My box - my advertising” to prevent people from receiving a surplus of flyers and leaflets in their postboxes. From 1 January 2024, advertisers will need to have signed a formal agreement in order to post commercial flyers in household letterboxes. This measure means that households with stickers on their postboxes requesting zero advertising should see their demands respected, even if their stickers are homemade.

DELHAIZE ARLON - The Delhaize supermarket in Arlon is being taken over by the Luxembourg-based Martelange.lu group next year. The store located on the Belgian border will open under new management from the second quarter of 2024, the group said in a statement. The company, which employs over 150 staff, said that they intended to showcase products by local artisans at the Arlon shop.

ACCIDENT BOAR - Emergency services report that a person was injured in an accident involving a wild boar on Monday evening. A motorist collided with a boar in Dreiborn, a crash that left one person injured. Emergency services from Remich and Wormeldange were called to the scene to provide assistance.

World

COP DEAL - The presidency of the climate summit in Dubai is preparing another version of the final agreement, after an early draft was condemned for not calling for a phase-out of fossil fuels. Negotiations have continued into the final scheduled day of COP28. The US climate envoy John Kerry has said that this conference could be the last at which the world could agree to limit temperature rises to 1.5 degrees.

ZELENSKY WASHINGTON - Ukrainian President Zelensky is in Washington today. In addition to meeting US President Joe Biden, he is also seeing members of Congress. The main topic is the American support for Ukraine in the war against Russia, which is being questioned by more and more Republicans. Meanwhile, fighting continues in Ukraine. Especially around Donetsk in the east of the country.

POLAND TUSK - In Poland, Donald Tusk will present the new government today. The parliament has named the former opposition leader and pro-European as the new head of government. It will put an end to the eight-year rule of the right wing nationlist Law and Justice party, which repeatedly clashed with EU authorities.

ISRAEL-HAMAS WAR - Israel is pressing on with its bombing of Gaza after saying its campaign to destroy Hamas has left the Palestinian militant group on the “the verge of dissolution”. Strikes on Monday targeted Gaza’s main southern city of Khan Yunis, now the epicentre of the fighting, which the Israeli military believes is the headquarters of Hamas and where the rest of the Israeli hostages are.Humanitarian leaders fear the territory will soon be overwhelmed by disease and starvation, and are piling diplomatic pressure on Israel to boost efforts to protect civilians.

CHRISTMAS STRESS - A German study has found that more than a quarter of all women find Christmas to be quite stressful, while men are more concerned about the high costs associated with the festive season. In the study published by the University of the Federal Armed Forces Munich, 27% of women were stressed whereas only one in five men associates Christmas with stress.

FOOTBALL - The Turkish SuperLig has been suspended indefinitely after a referee was punched by Ankaragucu’s president following a 1-1 draw with Rizespor. Halil Umut Meler was hit in the face on the pitch following Monday’s game, leaving the official with a black eye. According to local media Meler was transferred to a hospital due to his injuries. Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned the incident.

It’s Matchday 6 in the Champions League today. Among the matches Lens take on Sevilla, Eindhoven play Arsenal, Real Madrid play Union Berlin and Bayern take on Manchester United.

ATHLETICS - American sprinter Noah Lyles and Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon have been named the men’s and women’s track athletes of the year by World Athletics. Lyles was recognised for the three gold medals he won at the world championships in Budapest. Kipyegon clinched the women’s prize after setting three world records in the 1500m, the mile and the 5,000m.

Weather

Strong rainfall is expected for the south of Luxembourg today, but there is a small likelihood the clouds pass over France. If not, southern regions can expect up to 15l/m2 in the afternoon and early evening. The centre and north of the country will see between 2-5l/m2 of rainfall throughout the day - less, but still serious umbrella weather! Temperatures remain stable, with the minimum starting around 5 degrees, up to a slightly warmer 11 degrees maximum in the afternoon.
