
STEINFORT INCIDENT – A ‘joke’ by an underage pupil led to a major intervention by the police and the rescue services at the Steinfort ‘maison relais’ last Friday. The intervention was triggered after a student poured disinfectant, which had been provided for handwashing during the coronavirus pandemic, into a jug of drinking water. A dozen children and one teacher were hospitalised with the children undergoing blood tests and kept in for observation. Mayor Sammy Wagner confirmed the incident yesterday saying an investigation would be conducted to understand how this happened.
BETTEL BHUTAN – Luxembourg’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Xavier Bettel, has made a historic visit to Bhutan, marking the first official visit from Luxembourg to the country. In addition to meeting with Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, Bettel held a working session with the Bhutan Foreign Minister before heading to New Delhi, India where he participated in the multilateral Raisina Dialogue conference.
FILM FESTIVAL – The Luxembourg City Film Festival celebrated its 15th edition this year, drawing around 21,000 visitors and closing with a star-studded ceremony at Kinepolis Kirchberg on Saturday evening.
The closing ceremony, saw nine prestigious awards presented to the winners, with The New Year That Never Came by Bogdan Mureşanu claiming the coveted Grand Prix and the International Critic’s Prize.
MACEDONIA FIRE – A fire has torn through a nightclub in North Macedonia killing 59 revellers that were attending a hip-hop concert at the venue. Authorities said, 155 people have been injured with 18 of them in critical condition.
TRUMP PUTIN – US President Donald Trump says he plans to speak to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Tuesday about ending the war in Ukraine, adding discussions are already ongoing about “dividing up certain assets” between the warring parties. Trump’s envoy for the conflict, Steve Witkoff, has told CNN that he thinks “the two presidents are going to have a really good and positive discussion this week”.
RADIO LAYOFFS – Hundreds of reporters and other staff at Voice Of America, Radio Free Asia, Radio Free Europe and other outlets received a weekend email saying they will be barred from their offices after Trump put U.S. funded broadcasters on leave. The Czech Foreign Minister has vowed to keep Radio Free Europe on air.
STRANDED ASTRONAUTS – After more than nine months stranded on the ISS due to a faulty Boeing Starliner, US astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams will finally return to Earth on Tuesday. The stranded duo have been on the ISS since June after the Boeing Starliner spacecraft they were testing on its maiden crewed voyage suffered propulsion issues and was deemed unfit to fly them back to Earth.
FORMULA 1 – Lando Norris claimed victory for McLaren at the Australian Grand Prix to open his season with a bang.
After a front row lock-out, Norris led from start to finish, weathering a late charge from Max Verstappen who came in second place for Red Bull. Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton finished in eighth and 10th place respectively.
