A fire broke out at the Indorama Ventures industrial facility on Rue Schwarzenhof in Steinfort on Saturday afternoon, triggering a significant emergency response. The incident was first reported around 1pm, when emergency services were alerted to heavy smoke and visible flames coming from the roof of the site.
According to police and information obtained by RTL, the fire originated outside the building and affected solar panels installed on the roof. The Steinfort municipal administration also confirmed the incident in a public statement, assuring residents that the situation was "now under control".
Georges Comes, Commandant of Rescue Operations (COS), led the response on site and confirmed that the flames were rapidly extinguished. “We were alerted shortly before 1pm to reports of strong smoke development and visible flames on the roof of the industrial facility. The first emergency teams confirmed these reports, gained access to the building, and used an aerial platform to inspect the roof. It was quickly established that the fire involved photovoltaic panels. We managed to put out the fire, and, importantly, the flames did not spread into the building itself, so the situation was brought under control quickly. Our teams remained at the site to monitor for any possible flare-ups or hidden embers beneath the roof”, Comes explained.
No injuries were reported, and no personnel were present at the factory at the time, as staff were on leave, according to emergency officials. Approximately forty firefighters from several regional fire and rescue centres (CIS) responded to the incident, with drones also deployed to assist in surveying the affected area.
As a precaution, residents of the Steinfort municipality received a warning SMS via the LU-Alert system. Georges Comes confirmed the alert was issued “preventively” to ensure public safety.
In the message, residents were advised to keep doors and windows closed, avoid the immediate area surrounding the factory, and ensure access routes remained clear for emergency vehicles.
Authorities continue to monitor the site to prevent any potential rekindling of the fire and to ensure the area remains safe.
