Luxembourg

CARGOLUX STRIKE - The strike at Cargolux is over. After three days of strikes, negotiations between the company and unions concluded in an agreement to end the strike with immediate effect on Saturday. Cargolux management agreed to an increase of salaries for employees to 5.5% over 4 years. Under the new agreement, the salary scale for technical staff will also be adjusted and teleworking conditions will also be reviewed.

FINDEL DISRUPTIONS - There were still some disruptions at Findel airport yesterday, as several Luxair flights were cancelled due to ‘technical issues’ on planes that Luxair shares with German airways. The affected flights were to Paris, Budapest and Nice in the morning, followed by flight to Hamburg and Madrid in the afternoon.

PROTEST VIOLENCE - Saturday’s protest at Place de Paris against the Syrian regime was marred by violence as an elderly woman was injured by a motorbike and another protester was stabbed during a brawl. Police were able to identify the culprits behind the provocations and issued fines.

PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE - As the bridge goes into its final stages of construction, Ministers François Bausch and Sam Tanson have paid a visit and shared a first glimpse of the project. The project, which cost around €7 million, aims at facilitating pedestrian and cycle traffic between Avenue John F. Kennedy and Parc des Trois Glands. ICJ RUSSIA UKRAINE - Russia and Ukraine will face off at the International Court of Justice from today over Moscow’s claim of “genocide” in eastern Ukraine as a pretext for last year’s invasion. Representatives from the two warring nations will go head-to-head in The Hague over whether the top UN court has the jurisdiction to order a halt to Russia’s ongoing military action. The court’s decisions are binding although it has no “police force” to enforce them. Meanwhile Russia is reporting that a number of Ukrainian drones have been shot down… in the Crimea, but also in the region around Moscow. In its counter-offensive, Ukraine is increasingly relying on drone attacks. Ukraine says its forces have retaken Klishchiivka, a tactically important town south of the key frontline city of Bakhmut.

ITALY MIGRANTS - The EU have presented an emergency plan for Italy to help it handle migrant arrivals after a record number of people landed on its island of Lampedusa over the past week. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has offered a 10-point plan to help Rome deal with the crisis. Since Monday, around 8,500 people -- more than the island’s entire local population -- have arrived in around 200 boats.

LIBYA FLOODS - A week after a wall of water rushed through the Libyan coastal city of Derna, sweeping thousands to their deaths, the focus has turned to caring for survivors of the disaster. According to a United Nations report released on Sunday, the toll from Derna alone has risen to 11,300. Citing the Libyan Red Crescent, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs added that another 10,100 people were still missing in the devastated city.

OKTOBERFEST ACCIDENT - An accident on the first day of the world-renowned Oktoberfest, in Munich, left nine people slightly injured. On Saturday evening at around 10 pm, two wagons of the attraction “Höllenblitz” crashed into each other, for yet unknown reasons.The injured were treated by first responders on site, but two people had to be transported to a nearby hospital. The police have closed the ride and are now investigating the exact cause of the accident.

UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY - It’s a week of Diplomacy in New York. With a high-ranking summit today, the UN wants to boost its sustainability goals again.These were already fixed 8 years ago and were supposed to end hunger and poverty by 2030. Tomorrow is the start of the 78th general debate in the UN General Assembly, where representatives of the 193 member countries will meet, and where the Ukrainian war is once again the central subject. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will take part in the summit. From Luxembourg, both Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn as well as Ministers Franz Fayot and Joelle Welfring will take part.

RUSSELL BRAND SEX ALLEGATIONS - The BBC and Channel 4, former employers of British actor and comedian Russell Brand, have said are investigating claims of rape, sexual assaults and emotional abuse over a seven-year period, which the 48-year-old has denied. Four women have alleged sexual assaults between 2006 and 2013, when Brand was at the height of his fame working as a presenter for BBC Radio 2, Channel 4 and acting in Hollywood movies. The allegations were made in a joint investigation by The Sunday Times, the Times and Channel 4 Dispatches.

FORMULA 1 - Carlos Sainz led from start to finish to win a thrilling Singapore Grand Prix on Sunday. Lando Norris was second in a McLaren with Lewis Hamilton crossing the line in third. Championship leader Max Verstappen was fifth as Red Bull failed to win a race for the first time this season.

RUGBY - Fiji has produced the upset the Rugby World Cup needed, beating Australia to end almost seven decades of rugby pain at their hands while the 2019 finalists South Africa and England made it two wins from two. The Fiji players outmuscled the Wallabies to prevail 22-15 in a match that blows open Pool C. Defending champions South Africa and England won in contrasting styles, the Springboks thrashing Romania 76-0 in Pool B while the English ground out a 34-12 win over Japan in Pool D.

FOOTBALL RESULTS – some results from the weekend: In the German Bundesliga, Darmstadt and Gladbach drew 3-3. And Heidenheim beat Bremen 4-2.

In France, it was 0-0 draws for both matches Marseille against Toulouse and Lyon against Le Havre. And in England Arsenal won over Everton 1-0.
